Five Pillars of Islam Ritual Obligations In Muslim Life Paper Islam literally means “surrender” or “submission,” indicating wholehearted surrender to God, and a Muslim is one who submits to God (Allah) that Islam emphasizes practice over theology (Molloy, 2013). The Five Pillars are the ritual obligations that are practice by Muslims globally and these pillars are mentioned in the Qur’an. These Pillars are some obligations and are considered mandatory by believers are the foundation of Muslim life, which Muslims must satisfy to live a good and responsible life to bring them closer to God.According to the Five pillars of Islam, (2018) In Helicon (Ed.) the fiveobligations required of every Muslim are Shahadah: to affirm that there is only one God, Allah, and that Muhammad was Allah’s message, Salat: to pray five times a day, Zakat: to give alms (money) in a ‘tithe’ system, Sawm: to fast during the month of Ramadan, Hajj: to go on a pilgrimage to Mecca (Makkah) at least once in a lifetime, unless prevented by ill health or poverty. The second pillar of obligation, Salat is the pillar I have chosen to examine in more depth.Devout Muslims are called on to pray five times a day: before dawn and at midday, mid-afternoon, sunset, and nighttime (Molloy, 2013). Salat prayers must always be preceded by a ritual washing called Wudu’ (making pure or radiant) washing of the hands, arms, face, neck, and feet. The purification ritual is done with water but if the water is unavailable purification can be done with sand. Ghusl (meaning ‘washing of the entire body’) is used to remove impurities viewed as major, such as those caused by sexual relations, menstruation, or direct contact with blood or a dead body (Oxtoby, 2002). Each time of prayer consists of cycles or sets (rakas) with before dawn prayers consist of two rakas, midday and mid-afternoon are four’s rakes, sunsets being three rakes, and the night being four rakas. Friday is the day of public prayer, and on the other’s days, people may pray privately at home, at work, on in a mosque (Molloy, 2013).Muslims consider Dhikr is one of the best approaches to enter the highest level of Heaven to glorify the Oneness of Allah. But to Sufism, Dhikr is seen as a way to achieve religious enlightenment and achieve union or annihilation.I have chosen this particular pillar for the opening surah of the Qur’an plays a similar role similar to that of the Lord’s Prayer for Christians.
