Written paper: Bonheur and Matisse

Length of the paper is 2.5 to 3 pages, 1.15 line spacing, font size 11 – 12 point. Be sure to edit, proof-read and correct spelling errors. Use complete sentences and write thorough descriptions. Bullet and label each section to organize the content of your paper so it is easy to read.

Use the five categories of analysis and describe two paintings:

11th edition of the textbook

“Harvest Season” by Rosa Bonheur (Fig 3.36 on page 55). and “Large Reclining Nude” by Henri Matisse (Fig. 4.23 on page 85).

12th edition of the textbook

“The Horse Fair” by Rosa Bonheur (fig. 21.12 on page 370) and “Large Reclining Nude” by Henri Matisse (fig. 4.24 on page 85)

Organize your paper so that the two pieces of art are separate analysis (do not combine them in the same analysis). The segments of each art analysis need to be clearly identified as well. Include the following in your analysis of both works of art:

Subject Matter: representational, abstract, or non-objective. Be sure to include the referent if there is one
Medium: materials and techniques
Form: elements and principles of design
Content: the meaning of the work based on the subject matter, medium, and form
Personal response: how the art impacts you
ASSIGNMENT 2: ANALYZE A MOVIE (10 POINTS)
Required Reading

Prebles’& Artforms Chapter 9

Journal entry

Length of the journal entry is 1 to 1.5 pages, 1.15 line spacing, font size 11 – 12 point. Be sure to edit, proof-read and correct spelling errors. Use bullets and labeling to organize the content of your paper so it is easy to read.

1. In this assignment you will watch a movie and analyze it using the visual elements and principles of design. You can watch a DVD or other source as long as there are no commercial interruptions when you are viewing. You will need to be able to turn the sound down while watching and be sure to take notes while you are watching.

2. Choose a movie from any style or any era – it doesn’t need to be a current release.

3. When you are watching the movie, attend to the visual elements and principles of design used in the images. At some point, turn off the sound and notice how that changes your visual perception. You are not to write about the plot or the characters, unless they influence the visual aspects of the movie.

4. Do some research on the Internet to discover how the film was created, especially how the special effects were designed if appropriate. Listen to the additional information from interviews if included with the DVD (if watching a DVD).

5. Be sure to include the name of the movie and the date it was released. Also include at least two URLs of the websites you accessed and any other references you used.

6. Write a paper describing the visual aspects of the movie you watched. Include the following:

How were the visual elements and principles used in the movie?
How does this movie reflect the definition of photography as an art form as described in the text?
How did the movie reflect the society and culture of its time?
Did the movie inspire social change? If so, how?
