CLO 6: Plan, at a high level, the deployment of a new or update to an existing healthcare information
system, with special focus on the requirements, testing, and training activities to ensure safe and
effective operations when going live (PLG 4, UMBO 1, 2, 3, 4)
Overview
There is no one application(s) or instrument(s) that ensures healthcare success. Success comes from
alignment and mutual support without waste and errors of all of the stakeholders in the process. One
could argue that without computing, healthcares complexity would quickly overwhelm a purely manual
workflow. The old ways of working, however, often continue long after the new technologies and
systems have been installed. If all the stakeholders, be they doctors, nurses, specialists, administrators,
supervisors, technicians, support personnel, clerks, patients, and their families and friends are not in
alignment with one another as well as the technologies and devices, sub-optimal results will occur. If the
patient does not take the medication in the right amounts at the right time, it does not matter how
close to perfection the data gathering, diagnosis, or the treatment plan might have been. The whole
system must flow and bottlenecks, turbulence, waste, or confusion at any point by anyone can lead to
disastrous results. If you want dramatically better healthcare, the entire system must be adjusted or
tuned before the benefits and the efficiencies can be enjoyed.
How one addresses the hot spots makes all the difference. How can we be sure we are treating the
root cause as opposed to just the symptoms? How can we convince patients, their families, and their
friends that decades of certain behaviors are seldom completely resolved and undone by a course of
some prescription medications? This is especially difficult with behaviors that many use to define
themselves, such as many sport activities and social activities. Balancing the benefits with the impacts is
hard to do. How often is there serious if not permanent damage from pushing through the pain to the
team win? How can healthcare professionals better partner with their patients to provide the right
members, the right services, at the right time?
