Writing is a universal tool of communication. It has been around for centuries and has
evolved into the intricate medium we know today. Not everyone writes the same and while some
of us can use very few words to communicate a lot, others take a lot of words to pass a very
simple message. It all depends on how our analytical practices to communicate events, scenes,
thoughts, interactions, memories and form in a reflective manner. This introduces us to reflective
writing; the analytical practice in which writers describe events, scenes, thoughts, interactions,
memories, and form while adding a personal reflection on what the events, scenes, thoughts,
interactions, memories, and form mean to them. These reflections are from a point of feeling,
though, emotion or situation of the writer in regard to the events, scenes, thoughts, interactions,
memories, and form.
When I began writing my 39C, I was generally tense because the level of critique and
analysis that I had received during my 39B writing was about to get heightened. I was a pretty
good writer at the beginning but I still hoped that the class would make me a better writer as the
class involved constant deconstruction of our essays and thereby pointing out every flaw that was
in them. In this eportfolio reflection, I shall be observing my writings on two research papers that
I have done in this class, 39C. The first essay is ‘The Delayed Policy’ analysis of the following
articles, “The Nanny Dilemma,” “Blowups and other unhappy endings” and “Invisible Labors.”
The second essay shall be ‘The Delusion Dream for Migrant Women Domestic Workers’ in
which I submit that empowering women is crucial in ensuring that they realize their rights,
unlock their potential and ensure that migrant women are in a better position to advocate for their
labor rights.

Transferring What I Know
The introductory courses in this class helped me know the significance of crucial reading
and rhetorical analysis. Previously, critical reading was a little difficult due to my lack of
knowledge as far as the rhetorical analysis was concerned. My journey has been long a long way
throughout the entire series and my knowledge on this form of analysis has been continuously
tested. Some of the things that I have learned while writing my 39C include the need for source
analysis and preparation. The use of multimodality when crafting a research-based essay, is also
another skill that perfected when writing this essay. Taking a closer look at the entire progress
since the beginning of this quarter we shall see the improvements made and the challenges I
faced thus seeing the probability of future advancement prospects of my skills.
My Composition Process
When I began writing my Historical Conversations Project I only had three sources of
information and they had a massive amount of data to work with. The three articles, “The Nanny
Dilemma,” “Blowups and other unhappy endings” and “Invisible Labors” both tackled the issues
of stranded domestic workers who are victims of modern slavery. Therefore deciding what
sources of information to use where was an extreme exercise. This is where preparation came in
handy. I first listed every point that I could talk about to argue the case of these domestic
workers and effectively state their issue in line with the objective of the essay. In the first draft, I
had to let go of so many points. To do this I first crossed out the repeated points. Then I
eliminated the vague ones and finally settled on the most important ones.

Rhetoric, Argumentation & Multi-Modal Composition
Through imitating how prestigious authors’ approaches of constructing sentences and
narrating plots of stories, I revised my personal essay with rhetorical techniques used by authors
whom I imitated from. The whole study of writing 39B helped me realize that I cannot just craft
my own paper relying on imitations. Instead, I had to explore my own writer’s voice. I started to
pay more attention to different rhetorical skills showing up in texts. In the beginning, I attempted
to identify what specific rhetors implemented by writers on the purpose of modifying sentence
structures and polishing the usage of language. Through analyzing how rhetors help writers
convey their ideas, tones, and sentiments more effectively and implant potent impression and
reflection to readers’ mind, I found that the relationship between readers, writers, and rhetoric
was actually quite important to help me write rhetorically.
One of the most critical skills I have acquired since completing the Historical
Conversations Project and the Advocacy Project is recognizing and addressing both sides of the
argument. One thing I had not mastered is how one can easily strengthen the argument of an
essay by fully addressing both sides of the essay. By so doing I avoided giving too much
information without really stating the basis of my argument. For example, while I was talking
about the condition of Visa Protection I stated that;
The domestic workers in the United States are not subjected to the same form of unfair working
conditions like their counterparts from European countries.
The white workers are treated better from the women of color from immigrant countries since
they are allowed into the US through the congressionally sponsored Au pair program.

These statements already introduce the condition of the visa protection program and how
different ethnicities are being affected. I then go ahead to state the intended function of the visa
protection program and the contradictory condition of the program today as follows;
“Theoretically, the domestic worker visa program provides a window of opportunity for people
from developing countries to enter the United States and earn a decent wage. What the program
fails to do, however, is to ensure adequate protection for its visa holders”
Multimodality proved to be the most hectic element of research-based essays. In my
Historical Conversations Project, I was not able to bring it out as effectively as required. Despite
the fact that I included several multimodal elements their efficiency was not as I had intended.
While reading the multiple arguments on the topic of my Advocacy Project; I came to realize the
usefulness of the multimodality elements. Therefore in my Advocacy Project, I have managed to
include several emotional mages that are meant to increase the realism of the topic to my readers.
These images help the readers connect with the victims of my case. After this realization, I
adjusted my uses of multimodal elements and they were effective. In the Advocacy Project I
stated;
The demand for domestic workers in the developed world is on the rise and thus demand meet
supply as more migrant women from poorer countries seek opportunities to move to first world
countries in search for greener pastures via for-profit intermediaries. This is due to the large
income inequality gap that has been expanding.
I then used the image below to help the readers connect with the victims of my case.

Revision
After composing my first draft I realized that the structure of my ideas was not neat
enough and one of the problems is that my essay had applied too much vague language which
consumed space without clearly stating my points. This is needed to polish out. I changed my
introduction statements and made straighter to the point than before. For instance, in my draft
document I opened my essay as follows;
The Nanny Dilemma” by Susan Cheever offers a glimpse into a social dilemma and challenges
faced by Nannies in modern society. The article is based on the findings of the experiences of a
New York-based nanny Dominique who hails from Trinidad. This article identifies the issue of
social dependency on strangers to perform our parenting tasks.
However, on revising them, I began by introduction as follows;
The articles, “The Nanny Dilemma,” “Blowups and other unhappy endings” and “Invisible
Labors” clearly depict the condition of nannies in the United States Society. Domestic workers
have long faced a myriad of challenges in dispensing their duties mainly because the sector is
unregulated, not well compensated and not given the respect it deserves.

From the second piece which is revised, it is possible to see that the introductory statements are
clearer than before. Therefore it is easy to tell what the essay is all about from the second piece
rather than from the first.
When it came to writing the Advocacy Project Planning, I learned a lot about outlining.
Outlining was so important for ideas brainstorming which I would use to write. My technique
was to begin writing with one outline of a wide topic. I then move forward to add more details as
I find them appropriate. For instance, I began my essay by stating the broader spectrum of the
widening gap between the social classes. I stated the following;
The rising global income disparities have widened the gap between the rich and the poor and as
a result, forced migrant women from all over the world especially in third world countries to
seek a better life at all costs in more developed countries.
After this, I then narrowed to more specifics and by the end of my introduction; I had specified
that I was to talk about the issue of female immigrants who go into richer countries in search for
better living conditions. The end of my introduction states the following;
However, in new country difficulties such as language barrier and culture shock, the migrant
women become further isolated These workers are subjected to unfair working conditions, unfair
termination due to illnesses or pregnancy, lack of employment contracts, termination without
pay, racism, false accusations, physical abuse, language barrier, and human trafficking.
