BIOL1BL Monocots and Dicots Activity Development & Structural Features Essay earlier this semester we planted seeds and watched our plants grow, now we have to write an essay. the requirements are attached on the file below. Lab write-up instructions for monocot-dicot activity. Should be at least 3 pages
double spaced text plus photos(not including literature cited page (2pts)).
Statement of purpose/Abstract (5 pts) Learn to grow, compare development,
view monocot-dicot differences in early development, view internal structural
features with sectioning roots, stems and leaves. Learn staining techniques for plant
tissues. Include 1 or 2 summary sentences about the results here.
Introduction (5 pts) Explain the basic botanical differences between monocots
and dicots, with examples of species from each category, and where they all fit into
the broader Kingdom Plantae. Include 1-2 citations for your research in this section
of the paper.
Methods (5pts) Describe in detail the actual techniques we used, from plastic bag
germination (enough details that someone could replicate maybe even a drawing
of the setup!) Avocado/oak seed set up. Describe time frame for growing, potting
new seeds, and sectioning techniques including staining techniques. Also be sure to
include methods for recording growth of plants.
Results (5pts) Describe growth of plant from initial sprouting in bags and jars.
What came first (root/shoot?) Which species of plant sprouted first?
How do root and shoot growth rate compare in this early stage?
What about growth rate of seeds in pot that you followed in the green house?
Did the green shoot grow faster or slower in the controlled conditions of the
greenhouse compared to our less ideal plastic bags?
Provide a graph of the growth of plants. If you are graphing a monocot versus dicot,
put them on the same graph so you can visually compare. You can put roots and
shoots on same graph for initial plastic bag plants by using different colors for the
growth lines. Put a key to the color.
You can put monocot shoot in bag compared to monocot shoot in greenhouse on a
graph together. Same for dicot.
You can compare monocot to dicot grown in greenhouse on a graph together. If one
of your plants died, mention it, and then borrow someone elses data for the plant
that died.
If any plants died provide possible explanations for this (think competition,
resources, growing conditions, etc.)
Please include pictures of your plant as they grew and cross sections (these should
be labeled).
Discussion (8pts) Discuss growth rate differences between monocot and dicot and
also bag versus greenhouse conditions. Put some thought into this.
Discuss the parts that you could see in your cross sections (xylem, phloem,
parenchyma, etc.) and describe the differences between the monocot/dicot cross
sections.
Suggestions for what worked well, what didnt, what else we could do to improve
the results of this exercise.
Literature Cited (2pts)
This activity is worth 30 points and is due online on Blackboard, Sunday, April 29
