Program Goals
Go back and reread the readings for this week. Using what you read, in your group develop a
program goal for the program in your scenario. Be imaginative and picture the type of agency where
this program would reside and how the program fits into the agency structure. Develop your goal and
be certain it includes:
What the program is trying to address
The four (4) major characteristics of goals addressed in the text
The seven (7) minor characteristics of goals also addressed
Three (3) program objectives that relate to the program:
Make these objectives SMART.
Include one of each of the three types of program objectives
Include the indicator you will use to determine if each objective is being met
Explain why you chose these as your objectives
Why you chose this as your goal
I will attach reading and PowerPoints for this week.

Client: Dora
Agency: Mujeres Unidas Contra SIDA
Evaluation of Social Work Practice with Hispanic Children and Families
Client Description:
Dora is a 40 year old Latina of Mexican origin, living in San Antonio,
Texas who was diagnosed as HIV positive in 2000 shortly after giving
birth to her youngest daughter. The mode of transmission was through a
blood transfusion as testing of blood products was not practiced in
Mexico. Dora is undocumented and has been living in the U.S. for the last
twelve years. She is monolingual Spanish-speaking and has refused to
learn to speak English, even though she understands the language well.
She is a single parent raising two daughters, ages 20 and 14. Her
daughters are Lilia and Karla, both are bilingual and are considered to be
assimilated to American life style. Lilia is a dreamer who attends a local
community college, and recently applied for DACA and received
temporary resident status. She recently began working her first job at
one of the local malls. Karla is an 8th grader who attends a Catholic
school on the West Side of San Antonio. Dora is a licensed Registered
Nurse in Mexico, but cannot use her training here in the U.S. She works
out of her home as a caregiver for an 85 year old Mexican American
women who has Alzheimers and other medical problems.
Presenting Problem: Dora has recently been experiencing moments of extreme sadness. She
reports to start crying and cannot stop. She has had little energy to keep
up with the demands of raising her daughters and performing her job as
caregiver. Her 90 year old mother who lives in Mexico has fallen ill after
suffering a terrible fall. Dora is torn about going to see her mother since
she is afraid she will not be able to come back to San Antonio where she
has made a life for her family. Her siblings are putting pressure on her to
come home before something happens to their mother. Dora has been
attending the support group for women living with HIV at Mujeres for the
last five years. The social worker who facilitates the group has noted a
definite change in her mood. Dora comes to the weekly sessions and sits
quietly in the group and oftentimes breaks down in tears. She recently
went to her regular check-up and discovered that her T-cell count was
only 100 and that her viral load was extremely elevated.
Lilia contacts the social worker who she and her family have established
a trusting relationship with and expresses her concerns about her Moms
behavior. She says she is afraid that her mother is depressed and it is
affecting her ability to do her job. She has been stepping up to assist with
the caregiving, but she is not always available due to her school and work
demands. She knows her mother would like to go back to Mexico, but if
they go back they will lose so much that they have established as a way
of living.

Dora is afraid to reveal her concerns to the caregivers family as she fears
she will lose her job, which has kept her in a comfortable living style and
able to provide for her family for the last five years. The social worker
feels that Dora may need to be on anti-depressants and needs to talk to
her about setting an appointment with the psychiatrist at the local AIDS
clinic. She is aware that Dora takes a long time to form a trusting
relationship.
