In Session 2 you were required to describe the components of your current employer’s supply chain or
that of another company that you were familiar with. Using that supply chain as a basis, discuss where
the supply chain adds value. You do not need to submit a flowchart or picture of the value chain. After
you have posted your initial response, please interact with two of your classmates about what they have
posted.

Michael Porter’s value chain framework splits a business’s activities into primary and
secondary activities (Porter, 1998). In the supply chains we discussed in Session 2, we can
split operations into those two categories. Both add value and help create a competitive
advantage.
The company supply chain that I discussed in Session 2 was Burger King. I talked about the
supply chain used for getting the food from the farms to the restaurants. Just to quickly
review, the supply chain begins with the food items being grown at a farm, then to factories
to be processed, then to warehouses to be packaged, then distributed to the restaurants.
One added value activity that happens in this particular supply chain is at the factories
where the food is processed. For example, fresh meat is taken and ground and made into
patties for the burgers. Potatoes are cleaned, cut into strips, and frozen to be used for
French fries. Packaging of the food items is another place where the supply chain adds
value. Food is packaged conveniently so that it may be ready to be made as quickly as
possible when stored at the restaurant. These are examples of two primary activities in the
integrated supply chain.
Some secondary activities in the supply chain that add value would be facilities
management. The farms, the factories, the warehouses, and the restaurants must all be
managed appropriately in such a way that the processes of getting the food items through
the chain are time-wise, smooth, and consistent. Human resource management is another
secondary activity that adds value, as this is the part of the integrated supply chain that
includes recruiting professionals and training employees to do the primary activities of the
supply chain.

Because of the previous assignment, I will continue to choose Amazon to discuss where
supply chains add value to its business. Firstly, The quick delivery service helps the
company to achieve the order winner element (Collier & Evans, 2017). That is, the free two
– day Prime delivery option is a critical strategy which enhances the customer’s
experiences of the company by reducing their waiting time to access products. Secondly,
the effectiveness of Amazon’s supply chain also emphasizes on the mass customization,
which provides different choices for customers based on their preferences (Collier & Evans,
2017). For example, Amazon has an option to deliver goods only one day if customers
agree to pay an additional fee. On the other hand, Amazon provides free credits for
customers who delay receiving their products. Lastly, Amazon uses its effective deliver
option to improve its position in the market. That is, its main operational strategy is to
delight customers, which the above deliver prime’s option fits well. Because of the above
reason, the delivery option is one of the sustainable competitive advantages that the
company over a long period of time.
