Comprised of your own original response to the concert

Each review must contain:

The date of the concert
The venue of the concert
The name of the ensemble
The titles of pieces performed
For your classical review you must include the names of all pieces, and the number and title of each movement
For your jazz review you must include the name of at least four piecesperformed throughout the evening
The names of any significant performers
Classical: The conductor, and any soloists; if it’s a small-group concert, you must include the names of all members of the small groups
A summary, including your personal reaction to the concert and/or any specific pieces Concert Reviews
The purpose of this assignment is to get you out and participating in the local music
community, and seeing live music that you possibly might not encounter in your day to day life.
The Basics:
You must attend ONE classically-oriented concert, and ONE jazz-oriented concert over the course of
this term, making two concerts in total.
You will write a detailed review of each concert, to be submitted before (XXX DATE)
These two concert reviews combine for a grand total of 25% of your final grade.
The Details:
Each review must be:
• A minimum of 500 words long
• In standard MLA format
• Comprised of your own original response to the concert
Each review must contain:
• The date of the concert
• The venue of the concert
• The name of the ensemble
• The titles of pieces performed
o For your classical review you must include the names of all pieces, and the number

o For your jazz review you must include the name of at least four pieces performed

o Classical: The conductor, and any soloists; if it’s a small-group concert, you must

o Jazz: If it’s a jazz combo (3-6 players) you must name all members. If it’s a big-band
concert, just name the conductor and any major soloists
• A summary, including your personal reaction to the concert and/or any specific pieces
The Writing:
In writing, you must include:
• Appropriate use of course vocabulary
• Thorough discussion of the elements of music
• Good-faith descriptions of specific moments within the concert
o (Was there a killer trumpet solo? Did the violins play a particularly striking melody?
Was there an interesting accompaniment from the rhythm section?)
• A good-faith effort to document the events of the evening
• Appropriate levels of detail
A great review will put me right in your seat; from the approach on the promenade to the final bow, I
want to hear what you heard, and experience what you experienced from your writing.
How to do it:
Once you’ve determined an appropriate concert, bring a small notebook and a pencil and write down
anything (lit. ANYTHING) that interests you musically and otherwise. Take detailed notes, you never know
what information you might use when you get down to writing. Don’t be afraid to talk to other audience
members, and even the musicians if you get the opportunity.
Note: the musicians are working. Do not talk to them on stage or while they are performing.
Grading:
Your grade will take into consideration all of the above bullet points, and will also include the
following:
• Spelling and grammar
• Cohesion
• Creativity
Most of all, I want this to be a fun assignment for you. Be open to the experience, you may find
something you really enjoy!
