Introduction (1 paragraph): In the introduction, you should analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the reading’s argument. The first sentence of the paragraph should introduce the reading by title, the writer’s name, and the writer’s main idea. The following sentences should offer a short summary of the readings main details. The paragraphs should end with a thesis that takes a position on the writer’s viewpoint. The example paragraph Student B on page 135 is a good model for this structure.

Body (2-3 paragraphs): In the body paragraphs, you should respond to your thesis by evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of the writer’s argument. Don’t forget to provide textual evidence from the article to support your ideas.

Conclusion (1 paragraph): In the conclusion, you should respond to the writer’s ideas with your own viewpoint. Do you agree with what the writer says? Why or why not? How does the writer’s viewpoint relate to your own educational experience? Please refer to specific examples from the text in your response.

Analyzing an Argumentative Essay
Essay Assignment
Write an essay in which you analyze the strengths and weaknesses of
another writer’s argument. Explain what the author says, how well
the author’s points are made, and what points the author may have
overlooked. Your purpose is to establish and support your own position
agreeing or disagreeing with – or taking a mixed position toward – the
author’s viewpoint
. To accomplish this goal
, you will need to incorporate
ideas and details from the reading into your own essay (see Section I of A
Handbook for Writing, pages 236–273). You may write about more than
one reading, for example, by using evidence provided by one writer to
refute an argument presented by another writer. The exploratory writing of
one student, Ida Timothee, is included in the following guidelines to show
how she developed ideas for an essay that analyzes an argument.
Exploring a Topic
Exploring a topic for an essay analyzing an argument may involve using some
of the exploratory strategies described in Chapters 2 and 3. In addition, you
need to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of an author’s arguments and
determine why you agree or disagree with certain points. The strategies that
follow suggest approaches you can take to fulfill the assignment.
Selecting a Reading
Selecting a reading is a first step in analyzing an argumentative essay. You can
accomplish this goal by skimming the readings
, reviewing whatever you have
written about them, and then deciding which argumentative essay you want to
analyze.
A student writer at work: Selecting a Reading
After skimming the readings, Ida decided she wanted to write about Jacob
Neusner’s essay “The Commencement Speech You’ll Never Hear” (pages
125-126). This is what Ida said about why she chose Neusner’s essay:
what’s the word I want
“I was shocked when I read this article. Really shocked. It’s so … cold, so rude,
pessimistic. This essay really made me mad.

A student writer at work: Taking notes on a reading
As Ida reread Neusner’s essay, she underlined some of his key points. Then she
organized those points in a list. She did not list his supporting evidence because
the examples made her angry: “I was trying to concentrate on his major points
so that I could argue logically with him, without too much angry emotion.
