Reaction Paper
General Psychology – Spring 2019
Prof. Davida Rodgers
One Reaction Paper will be due this semester. Many topics presented in this class have
personal interest to students, so this paper is a way for students to choose a topic interesting to
them and gain further understanding. Please keep in mind the main purpose of this paper is to
demonstrate that adequate time and thought have been put into assessing the topic presented.
Critical thinking skills, clearly presented thoughts, and timeliness of submission are important.
Therefore, when students wait until the last minute and attempt to put a paper together quickly, it is
noticeable and will be graded on such efforts.
The reaction paper will be due on May 1, 2019 by turning it in to the Turn It In dropbox in
the appropriate location in our online class.
For the topic, please find one other source other than your book and the online learning
modules. Students will use these two sources (the book and one other source) to present the
background and any relevant or interesting information on the topic. Selecting an additional source
will be an exercise in selection skills for a reliable source. This is a skill essential to success in
higher education, and a needed skill in our culture in general. Please explain to me in your paper
why you selected the source you choose, why you think it’s reliable to cite, and what you learned
from it. The paper should be laid out like this: Paragraph 1 – description of topic using what has
been learned in class and from the book; Paragraph 2 – additional insight/information gained from
the second source; Paragraph 3 a short evaluation of the material presented, including the
student’s opinion and personal application/insights. Please include a Reference Page at the end to
cite your sources. Sources used but not cited will be assumed to be plagiarized and the paper will
receive a ‘zero’ grade. In the field of psychology, we use APA standards for citing papers. You can
find more information about this here: http://www.lonestar.edu/library/citation-help.htm
To help get you started, below is an example of how to cite in paper and on the reference
page for a template and for the online version of our textbook:
In paper: ex. (Author Last Name, Year).
Our textbook: (Spielman, Dumper, Jenkins, Lacombe, Lovett, & Perlmutter, 2014).
Reference page:
Last Name, First Initial. Middle Initial., Last Name, First Initial, Middle Initial. (Year). Name of article with
no caps after the first word. Name of Journal in italics, Issue Number, page numbers.
Spielman, R.M., Dumper, K., Jenkins, W., Lacombe, A., Lovett, M., & Perlmutter, M. (2014). Psychology.
Retrieved from https://Openstax.org/details/books/psychology/Bookdetails.
Papers should be a minimum of 2-3 pages in length, not including the Reference Page, and
should be double-spaced. No cover page is needed. Students are encouraged to discuss their topics
and brainstorm ideas with each other. However, this is an individual assignment and plagiarism
will not be tolerated. Please reach out to your instructor at any time if you have questions. Have
fun looking into topics that interest you!
