Module 14 Vivaldi Gloria Live Concert Performance Review Assignment Overview
This course requires a course project in the form of a Live Performance Review, which develops the following competencies:
Examine personal perceptions of Western classical music in the context of a live performance.
Provide a critique of a live performance of music from the Western classical tradition.
Explain the extent to which the music considered in this course intersects with the sociocultural traditions of personal life experience.
In order to meet these competencies, you are required to attend a concert of music (symphony, instrumental or vocal recital, opera, chamber music, or ballet) during the current term. One of the competencies of this course is to expose students to music they would not ordinarily listen to in an attentive and thoughtful way. Thus rock concerts, country music, jazz, high school performances, Broadway shows, and rock club performances are not eligible for this assignment.
Attending the Performance
While your Live Performance Review is not due until Module 14, it is important to find a performance taking place during this semester and put it on your calendar as soon as possible. Since this is an online course, it would be impossible to provide a list of performances and venues that would work for all of you. However, in general, community colleges, universities, local music organizations, and community centers are often excellent sources of live performances. For those of you who happen to be located near Schoolcraft College’s main campus, here are just a few recommendations for concert opportunities in Southeast Michigan:
Schoolcraft College offers recitals during the academic year. Search for concerts on the Schoolcraft News & Events page or contact the Schoolcraft Music Department for exact dates and times.
The University of Michigan’s School of Music, Theater, and Dance offers a regular schedule of recitals and concerts, many of them free of charge. A musical event is scheduled there nearly every day.
The University Musical Society in Ann Arbor offers an impressive schedule of concerts. There is a charge for these concerts.
The Ann Arbor Symphony, Detroit Symphony, Michigan Philharmonic in Plymouth, Dearborn Symphony, and the Livonia Symphony also offer concerts. There is a charge for admission for their concerts, but the ticket prices range quite a bit.
Check the musical offerings at other local colleges, especially EMU and Wayne State.
If you have any doubts about what concert to attend, e-mail me and I will help direct you. Ultimately, it is your responsibility to find a concert to attend, and attend the concert in sufficient time to write a quality review. Note: Check the course Schedule before you choose the concert you wish to attend. It is imperative that you make sure that we will have covered the genre of music you will see performed before you attend the performance.
Writing the Review
Your Live Performance Review will be at least 5 pages, follow MLA formatting (double-spaced, Times New Roman 12pt font, one-inch margins), and include all of the following:
A general description of the concert. Why did you choose this concert? Where did it take place? What was being performed? Who was performing? What was the venue, audience, and “feel” of the performance?
An analysis of each piece performed. Include the title, composer, historical context, and a detailed description of the musical features and elements as presented in this course (form, texture, timbre, dynamics, etc.).
A personal reflection. What was your reaction to the concert? What emotions or personal experiences were brought to mind as you listened to the performance? Do you think your reaction was what the composer intended? Explain.
An effective conclusion. Sum up the performance in your own words. How did your study of music during this semester aid in your appreciation?

This resource will help you prepare for, actively listen to, and write a critique of your chosen performance. This assignment is worth 150 points and will be evaluated using the MUS 105 Live Performance Review Rubric, which is available from the Grade Center and when you open the assignment in Module 14.
