JWI510 Jack Welch Leadership Experiences & Managerial Aspects Reflection Paper For this assignment, you will reflect on your leadership experiences, assess your strengths, evaluate your
emotional intelligence and DiSC profile, and develop a plan for mastering your leadership style.
Instructions:
Write a 4-5 page paper in which you address the following:
1. Reflect on your leadership experiences:
a. Describe the leadership and managerial aspects of your most recent professional role
b. Identify and describe 2 key experiences that have impacted you as a leader
2. Assess your leadership strengths:
a. Describe 2 key strengths, from Jack Welch’s Foundational Principles and 8 Essential Rules of
Leadership as they pertain to your leadership development
3. How do these experiences and strengths relate to aspects of your Emotional Intelligence and
your DiSC profile?
4. Develop a plan for mastering your leadership style:
a. Identify 2-3 leadership skills you would like to master in the future
b. Describe steps you can take to master those skills. How will you measure your success? Running head: MY LEADERSHIP PROFILE
Note to students: This is a template and checklist corresponding to your Assignment 1
paper My Leadership Profile which is due week 3, Sunday. This template crosswalks the
Assignment 1 instructions and the grading rubric to help ensure that you address everything
required by the assignment. This is an example of a paper formatted to align to JWMI Writing
Standards. It is offered as one approach to formatting professional papers. Please note: Green
text includes instructions and clarifications that will be deleted before submitting your final
paper while the blue text indicates areas where you need to replace the writing with your own
information. You may keep the headings and subheadings that are in black, bold type since
they align to each sections required content. However, you may also choose to rename them as
long as the titles align to each sections content. The final product that you submit for grading
should be only in black text with all remaining green and blue removed. Your final paper should
be 4 to 6 pages in length (page count does not include the cover page and the references page(s)
at the end). If you do go over 6 pages, just make sure that the information you provide is not
redundant and adds value to your reflections.

MY LEADERSHIP PROFILE
1
Introduction
You will begin with an introduction here. Consider starting your introduction with a
general and brief observation about leadership and the importance of leadership in todays
organizations. Then, you will want to include a thesis statement which is the road map for
your paper, as it helps your reader navigate your work. You can refer to your headings to help
you develop your thesis statement since those identify the topics to be addressed. Basically, in
your thesis statement, you will drill down to specific areas you plan to address in your paper in
the order in which you plan to address them. Because of this, sometimes the introduction is not
finalized until you complete the other sections of your paper. It is appropriate in this paper to
write in first person, using I, as this is a self-analysis. However, in all academic writing, avoid
second person you.
My Leadership Experiences
A quick note about formatting: The body of this paper should have one-inch margins and use
a professional font (size 10-12). Select a font that is easy to read, such as Arial, Courier, Times
New Roman, or Calibri. To aid ease of reading, double space throughout the paper. Align the
manuscript flush left, resulting in an uneven right margin. Indent paragraphs five spaces (or set
your tab to .5). Page numbers are one inch from the top right edge of the paper. This template is
already formatted with these specifications.
The My Leadership Experiences section addresses number 1 from the assignment
instructions. To help organize your writing in this section, you may respond to this part of the
assignment using the following two subsections. However, you may choose to write a short
paragraph here under the main My Leadership Experiences heading that provides some brief
MY LEADERSHIP PROFILE
2
context, or you may choose to just begin writing under the first subsection, while keeping the
main heading in place.
My Current Role
In this section, describe the leadership and managerial aspects of your most recent
professional role. Be specific about your role. Discuss whether you lead a team or teams or if
you are an individual contributor. You may be a full-time student or between jobs. In these
cases, think about the leadership and managerial aspects of whatever role you find yourself. If
you are not in a professional role and have difficulty finding leadership and managerial elements
of your current situation, think about leadership you provide in your community, in your school,
and in your family.
Key Leadership Experiences
In this section, briefly identify and describe two key experiences that have impacted you
as a leader or as an aspiring leader. Be specific by providing concrete examples and discuss each
experience separately. You may have participated in a great experience that taught you a lot
about who you are (or wanted to be) as a leader or perhaps you learned by being part of, or
observing, a leadership situation that did NOT go well. Think back on those experiences that
you believe contributed in some way to your current beliefs and behaviors relating to leadership.
My Leadership Strengths
This section addresses number 2 in your assignment guidelines. In this section, please
describe two key strengths from Jack Welchs Foundational Principles and 8 Essential Rules, as
they pertain to your own leadership development. Be specific about the rules or principles and
be sure to connect to relevant course material for support. Discuss why you chose these

particular strengths and why is it critical for you to ensure you continue to direct your energy
constructively on these strengths as you proceed through your leadership journey.
My Emotional Intelligence
In this section, you will be addressing the first part of number 3 from your assignment
instructions which relates to Emotional Intelligence. EI is discussed in your Week 3 lecture notes
and in the Week 3 article by Daniel Goleman, Leadership That Gets Results. On page 4 of the
article under Emotional Intelligence: A Primer, Goleman defines and provides hallmarks for
each of several components of Emotional Intelligence (i.e., self-awareness, self-regulation,
motivation, empathy, and social skill). Think about your own Emotional Intelligence as you
reflect on each of these capabilities and competencies along with their examples. Isolate a couple
of components that you believe have contributed to the leadership strengths you identified in the
section immediately above. Alternatively, you can also identify a couple of areas that you need
to refine or to strengthen to have maximum leadership effectiveness.
MY LEADERSHIP PROFILE
4
My DiSC Profile
In this section, you will reflect on your DiSC Profile that was generated as part of your
Week 2 requirements as it relates to your leadership strengths. This section addresses the second
part of number 3 from your assignment instructions. Recall that the DiSC is a behavior
assessment tool that focuses on four different behavioral traits: dominance, influence,
conscientiousness and steadiness. Think about how your DiSC style contributes to those
strengths. For example, if you identified that one of your strengths was your ability to maintain
harmony in your team and you have an S (steadiness) style, reference your DiSC report for
areas where this behavior is addressedyou will find that maintaining harmony and being a
peacemaker is a hallmark of an S style.
Leadership Skill Development
In this section, you will be addressing number 4 from your assignment instructions. You
will identify two or three leadership skills that you would like to master in the future. Be specific
as you identify each skill. After you have identified these skills, address each one in relation to
what actionable steps you will take towards mastery and how you will measure your success. Be
sure to integrate course material for support of your development plan.
Conclusion
Similar to the introduction where you provided your thesis of what you will cover in your
paper, the conclusion is the section where you summarize what you covered with one or two key
insights. Highlight the most important aspects of your paper that you would like the reader to
remember. Your conclusion should be clear, direct, and concise. Do not introduce new
information. On the page immediately following your conclusion, you will add your
References or Sources page. An example of this page is at the end of this document. First, be
MY LEADERSHIP PROFILE
5
sure to review the following informational sections that will help you properly integrate and cite
your sources within your paper.
In-Text Citations
Within the body of the paper, when concepts from specific sources are used, a citation
containing the authors last name, and the number of the citation in your reference/source list is
necessary, such as (Welch, 1). This is called an in-text citation. The number in the parentheses
corresponds with the entry on the References page, allowing readers to look up the source of the
citation. We do not recommend the use of footnotes. All in-text citations should be placed in the
body of the document at the end of the sentence where the source was used. Following you will
see two examples of in-text citing. One example shows how to cite when you include the
authors name in the sentence and the other when the author is not mentioned in the sentence.
Example 1: Jack Welch noted that when you become a leader, the focus is on growing
others (1). Note that the authors name was used in the sentence, so it is not necessary to
include it again in the parentheses. In this case, I only enclose in parentheses the source number
from the reference list. If I look at the References list, I should see the Welch source listed as
number one. Alternatively, if you don’t reference the authors name in your paper, you have to
include the last name within the in-text citation as seen in the next example.
Example 2: As a leader develops, the focus becomes more about developing the skills
and talents of others (Welch, 1). Note that we did not mention the authors name in the sentence,
so we need to include the authors name within the parentheses along with the source number.
Say the next source you used in your paper is Goleman, then your citation is (Goleman, 2) or
simply (2), if you have referred to Goleman within the sentence. If you were then to use Jack
again later in the paper he remains (Welch, 1) when he is cited, and so on.
MY LEADERSHIP PROFILE

References
At the end of your paper you will include a References or Sources page. This page
lists a reference entry for every source that you cited within your paper. All sources applied in
your paper must be listed on your References or Sources page. This page does not count towards
your required page count for the assignment.
The format of the reference entries varies by the source type. We have included examples
of different source types in the sample References page at the end of this document. References
are numbered according to the first time you use them in your paper. Sources are only listed
once on your References page even if the same source is used/referenced again in different
parts of your paper. You continue to use the same original source number for your citations
throughout the paper. See the last page of this document for an example.
Course Lectures and Media
Application of course materials is required in this paper. For this assignment, you will
want to integrate course material from weeks 1-7. This means you may be including references
to course lectures and videos. Use formal citations and references for course lectures and videos
as follows:
If the material is from the current course, use the following in-text citation format of
(JWI510, 3). The three at the end indicates the number of this source on your reference
list. Then, we know we can go to the third source on your reference list for more
information about that source. If I look at this templates References page, I see that the
third source is a lecture and I can identify the week and the title.
If the material is from another course, use the same in-text citation format such as
(JWI505, 4). We can then look at the fourth entry on your reference page for more
information on locating that source. If I look at this templates References page, I see the
fourth entry is for a course video from JWI505.
MY LEADERSHIP PROFILE
7
To list the entries for course lectures or videos on your References page, use the following
format:
JWI510. Week 3. Lecture 1. Lecture Title
See the References list at the end of this template to view examples.
Quotations
Originality is an important aspect of graduate writing. To ensure original thinking,
quoting should be done only sparingly; be sure that you have a good reason to include a direct
quotation when you decide to do so (Quoting, Paraphrasing, and Summarizing, 5). Notice the
placement of the quotation marks, citation, and final punctuation after the citation. Keep your
quotes to approximately 25 words or less, and no more than 1-2 sentences. Paraphrasing, putting
the information in your own words, is much preferred as it shows your application and
knowledge of the material. In this case please use citing, but quotation marks are not required.

YOUR DiSC® OVERVIEW
How is this report personalized to you, ERIC?
In order to get the most out of your Everything DiSC Workplace® Profile, youll need to understand how to read your
personal map.
Your Dot
As you saw on the previous page, the Everything DiSC®
model is made up of four basic styles: D, i, S, and C. Each
style is divided into three regions. The picture to the right
illustrates the 12 different regions where a persons dot
might be located.
Your DiSC® Style: S
Your dot location shows your DiSC style. Because your dot
is located in the middle of the S region, you have an S
style.
Keep in mind that everyone is a blend of all four styles, but
most people tend strongly toward one or two styles.
Whether your dot is in the center of one style or in a region
that borders two, no dot location is better than another. All
DiSC® styles are equal and valuable in their own ways.
Close to the Edge or Close to the Center?
A dots distance from the edge of the circle shows how naturally inclined a person is to encompass the
characteristics of his or her DiSC style. A dot positioned toward the edge of the circle indicates a strong inclination
toward the characteristics of the style. A dot located between the edge and the center of the circle indicates a
moderate inclination. And a dot positioned close to the center of the circle indicates a slight inclination. A dot in the
center of the circle is no better than one on the edge, and vice versa. Your dot location is near the edge of the circle,
so you are strongly inclined and probably relate well to the characteristics associated with the S style.
Now that you know more about the personalization of your Everything DiSC Workplace Map, youll read more about
what your dot location says about you. Then youll learn about your personal map shading and priorities, and
discover how this affects your preferences. After that, youll learn some basics about the other DiSC styles and how
to use that information to connect better with everyone in your workplace.

YOUR DiSC® STYLE & DOT
Your Dot Tells a Story
Your DiSC Style is: S
Because you have an S style, ERIC, youre probably a cooperative person
who takes pride in doing your part to help the team. Even if youre
competitive, you dont need to win to feel good about yourself. In fact, when
you receive credit for a job well done, youre probably quick to share it with
others.
You probably tend to be quite accommodating, and you find it important to
maintain the approval of others. Consequently, you may put a lot of energy
into catering to other people. In fact, you may have difficulty saying no, and
you may fail to let people know when youve been inconvenienced.
You tend to have a strong need for harmony, so conflict is probably difficult
for you. Most likely, youre troubled by the idea of hurting someones feelings, and you may spend time
dwelling on incidents that other people wouldnt think twice about. In group situations, you often play the role
of peacemaker, but when things become heated, you may shut down and simply wait for the tension to pass.
Because your self-esteem isnt primarily tied to accomplishments, youre probably fine working quietly behind
the scenes. While you like to feel appreciated, you may get embarrassed if the praise is too public or gushing.
In general, you probably hold yourself to much higher standards than you hold other people, and you may
take criticism really hard. And, because you often downplay your own performance, others may fail to
recognize your contributions altogether.
You tend to be very accepting of both people and ideas. In fact, because youre instinctively …
