Jeff Bezos Amazon Online Bookseller Discussion Hi Ryan , we give comment for each submission from other people for the paper that we did aboutAmazonSmply agree or disagree like or not ?Please see attached image In 1994, Jeff Bezos started Amazon in the garage of his home in Seattle, Washington. The initial focus of the startup was to be an online bookseller. From that point until now, Jeff embodied the discount selling world by watching any business expenditures. To grow to a half a trillion dollar company,
Bezos continued to add to the services offered by the company. As the company continued to grow, the diversification became greater.
There were several strategic initiatives implemented in the first ten years, the point where Amazon first became profitable. These included some simple things like “one-click” ordering as well as some services that seemed complementary to selling books; the Amazon Market Place. Even though
these were not textbooks, they were sold the same way textbooks were sold. They had ratings by users and made it easy for buyers to look at and compare products and make simple purchases.
With the signature line of “the everything store”, Bezos knew he needed to continue ramping up the offerings by Amazon. To combat against people being wary of buying on a very regular basis, the CEO developed Amazon Prime, allowing people to join for $99 per year and, amongst other things,
receive free second-day shipping on most of their products. In my opinion, this was genius as people do not seem to hesitate to order day after day since they are not worried about the shipping costs.
Jeff Bezos’ diversification took a big turn in March of 2006 when Amazon Web Service, a cloud-based computing service. This was more than just successful, today it is Amazon’s most profitable service. Then in 2007 and again in 2017, Amazon joined the grocery business. First with their Fresh
Grocery Service and later with the purchase of Whole Foods Market.
Amazon continued to find ways to make their services easier for their customers to use. Most significantly, in my opinion, was the development of the price check bar code reader in 2010. This was genius as people would walk through Walmart and most other stores and use the Amazon scanner to
check the prices on their products to see if Amazon could provide them cheaper – and with no shipping cost for Prime users, the only minor negative is they had to wait two days for the products to arrive.
Developing their own electronics has been a major boom for the company. With the various Kindle e-readers they’ve developed and sold over the years, it’s helped them to grow their e-book business to the largest in the world also. There is also the Amazon Echo, the Kiva System they purchased
which was a warehouse robotics company (perfect for them). And the current development of a drone delivery business where they hope to be able to deliver some items within a certain area of their warehouses, products within 60 minutes.
One advancement that seems to have fallen in line with Amazon’s initial intent is the development of Amazon campus stores. They work with universities around the country to brand their stores with the university’s name, for example, Amazon@Purdue, to provide not only books, but any other
products you can buy from Amazon very easily to the students. Thinking of every angle, Amazon also uses this model to make returning products just as easy as buying them (watch out Walmart).
Companies like Walden Books and Borders Books have both proven that by not diversifying, you can’t continue to compete. I think another interesting point is that they drove out the initial competition by not having brick-and-mortar stores saving the money and only providing services online.
Now, they have gotten into hard stores with Amazon specialty stores and the purchase Whole Foods Market.
The only real question left now is, what’s next?
COLLAPSE
The idea of Jeff Bezos, began when he discovered that the largest bookstores in the United States already had an electronic inventory. Basically, they only needed a place on the Internet where the books could be grouped, and where the public could search the virtual stock for the available books and
order them directly through a website.
Bezos offered them this digital platform and this idea had an unexpected success, for 1997 Amazon.com was known worldwide. It is here when Bezos decides to change his initial focus, expand his business, and not limit himself to books. Amazon started selling CDs, DVDs, toys, electronics and
even clothes. The idea of this company is to offer products that the client needs. Bezos took a risk and started offering basic products, such as clothes, toys, CDs, products that can be obtained anywhere like a shopping center, but from the comfort of your home, with just 1 click, the product arrives at the
door of your house.
Today, Amazon is a company focused on the customer. According to Bezos “Our vision is to be the most customer focused company on Earth; build a place where people can come and discover whatever they want to buy online”.
