We will discuss further in class as to how to narrow your research to answer a specific question. In an attempt to make sure you are heading down the correct research path, you will submit a proposal and annotated bibliography. The proposal is a way to show me in writing what specifically you plan to research as well as how you will attempt to answer your research question. An annotated bibliography is a great way to show your instructor, as well as yourself, how much progress you have made in the research project as well as what sources will really assist you in your research.

Assignment 5A: Research Proposal

Your first assignment in the creation of your Annotated Bibliography Paper (5B) is to create a formal Research Proposal using the narrowed topic you generated in your Assignment 6A and the background research on your topic done on our Library Day.

The function of your research proposal is to provide space to begin further brainstorming and narrowing down your research topic, generate ideas relating to the research topic, and formulate questions you may wish to consider when writing your paper. The proposal is also an excellent medium for you to consider what main ideas you are going to have to establish in order for you to begin writing your paper. It is also important for you to start considering what frame you will be placing around your topic. Another way to say it: Consider what ideas you will use to discuss your topic.

Instead of an outline which assumes that you already have some idea of the structure of your paper, this assignment discusses what your paper might be about. As a result, you should see the proposal as an exploration of your narrowed topic, your ideas on the topic, your reasons for choosing the topic, and what you will need to do in order to complete your essay. Students often find that creating a research question is helpful because in-depth questions, by definition, demand explorative answers. Within those answers, you may find that your topic narrowing itself, or you may find a new topic that is more interesting to you.

You may approach your proposal any way your feel, but please make sure you address at the very least the following:

Indicate your topic, the social problem you will be exploring.
Why does this topic interest you personally? (It is VERY important that you have a topic that interests you because if you aren’t interested, you will not do well.)
What questions do you want to address in your paper?
How focused is your topic? Have you picked a specific problem, idea, issue?
Do you have any thoughts on how to solve or address this problem?
Do you have any ideas on how you think the paper will be structured?
If you have a preliminary position in relation to your topic and research question, indicate what that position is.
What types of sources will you need to find to develop your argument in this paper? What type of information will you need from your sources?

Assignment 5B: Annotated Bibliography

An annotated bibliography formalizes your research process. It forces us to spend a bit more time thinking about the sources we’re using, whether we can trust them, and how we are using them in our writing. For this assignment, you should take your research proposal (5A) and thesis statement (6B) and locate five or more sources of academic quality that you can use to provide background on your chosen social problem and support your proposed solution in your Argumentative Research paper (6F).

You will need to use credible library and/or Internet resources to find five reliable sources. Your annotated bibliography should include four distinct parts:

A full citation of each source in MLA Style as it would appear on your Works Cited page (alphabetical order, hanging indentations, etc.).
A short one paragraph summary below each source of the important information it contains.
A thoughtful one paragraph explanation below each source of why you found this source to be credible.
A short one paragraph explanation below each source of how you could use this source to develop your topic and support your thesis.

Other than the citation, each part of your Annotated Bibliography should consist of complete sentences. Make sure to visually distinguish each part of the assignment.

Your final copy should be typed and printed in Times New Roman 12 point font and include your name, date, and all other relevant information.

Sources can be electronic or print, but should be of academic quality (no .com, no wiki, no dictionaries or encyclopedias).

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask!

Due on the final day of class (5A-5B).

Submission Instructions: Check your Course Schedule Announcement for deadlines and due dates. All assignments are due on Canvas by the start of class time on the due date. Make sure to use only .doc, .docx, .pdf, or .rtf file extensions. Make sure to submit assignments 5A and 5B into separate dropboxes. If you experience any technological issues, please submit your assignments in emails to me as attachments before the deadline for submission.
