1. Why was slum clearance controversial? What were the perceived benefits and costs and who experienced them?
2. Urban planning, after the industrial era, can be conceptualized as a series of problems and responses to those problems. Using an example from the lecture, explain what is meant by this conceptualization. Then apply this conceptualization by describing what you think the current “urban problem” might be. In other words, considering the modern context, what should be a big picture issue urban planners should focus on? So briefly explain how planning is conceptualized and then briefly identify an urban issue and explain why that issue should be the focus of modern urban planners (put it into context).
3. How does urban planner Kevin Lynch attempt to unite form (the spatial arrangement of material things in the city) to values (the things that a particular group of people hold to be important) and still maintain the universality of his theory (the ability to apply the theory to all cities regardless of context) of what a good city should be?
