Question:

Gulliver, in the different parts of the book, finds himself in situations where his size is drastically changed in relation to the people he interacts with. How does this change of size affect Gulliver’s experiences and his relationships? What is Swift seeking to accomplish with this device?

Oroonoko

Question:

Behn spends quite a bit of time discussing the physical characteristics of various people, especially Oroonoko and Imoinda. How does she describe them? Can you formulate any purpose to her descriptions? What might she be trying to achieve by describing them as she does? Do you find any evidence of a European aesthetic in her descriptions? That is, what are the characteristics that she finds appealing, and what does she dismiss as inferior?

Is there any significance to the order in which Gulliver’s journeys take place? What about the flow of action in the narrative of Ooronoko? Do the authors build each development from the previous action? What are they building toward?
