Help me study for my History class. I’m stuck and don’t understand.
For the second paper, you will choose ONE of the two pairs of books listed below. Both pairs tackle the subject of growing inequality in America since the 1980s. The books in the first pair are first-person accounts of economic hardships. The second pair includes one book by a political scientist (Bartels) and one by a journalist (Taibbi). Choose one pair and write an analytical essay that examines some of the interesting points of comparison between the two books in the pair.
First pair:
Ben Hamper, Rivethead (entire)
Barbara Ehrenreich, Nickel and Dimed (entire)
Questions to think about: What is hard/demeaning/destructive about the work described in the two books? Do the authors propose solutions? If so, how do these solutions differ? How does gender affect the story told by each author? Do the authors maintain that menial work leads to class solidarity in the United States? Why or why not? How do these two books help you to understand industrial and post-industrial labor in the United States since the 1980s?
OR:
Second pair:
Larry Bartels, Unequal Democracy (assignment: chapters 1-3, 8-9)
Matt Taibbi, The Divide (assignment: introduction, chapters 1-2, 7-9)
Describe the increase in the wealth and income gap, the “justice gap,” and political polarization in the United States since the 1970s. According to these two authors, what were the most important causes of these increases? What are their consequences?
