Glover, Humanity, Preface and Part One Discussion Questions

For our Discussion Board Assignment this week please choose ONE of these prompts and write a 3-4 paragraph response to it. Please make sure to include at least one quote from the book and to explain how the quote is relevant to your ideas and argument. Reply to student.

1.Discuss and explore the idea of a moral law within us.

2.Discussion question: explain and analyze Nietzsche’s rejection of the idea that the world has some intrinsic meaning in it. DO you think the world has any intrinsic meaning? If so, what is the meaning of the world?

3.Writing exercise: Think of several examples where the social pressures against harm to others are weak or non-existent. Try to get close to your own life/world in these examples. What do these examples tell you about human moral psychology?

4.Discussion question: Why should we do the right thing (should we do the right thing?)?

5.Discussion question: Glover asserts that the human responses of sympathy and respect comprise the core of humanity. What do you think comprises the core of humanity and how do you know that your answer is true (what is your rationale, your evidence, your justification)?

6.Discussion question: What are your moral commitments? Discuss one or two experiences you have had where these moral commitments have been challenged, formed, or changed.

7.Discussion question: Does amoralism=realism?

8.Discussion question: On what grounds does Glover argue that it may be possible to end the festival of cruelty? Do you agree or disagree with Glover on this point, and why? Try to include discussion of current world events in your answer.

9.Discussion question: As best as you can, explain Glover’s plan for this book. Be sure to include the following terms in your explanation: moral resources, moral psychology, humanity, moral identity, cruelty.
