Logos, Pathos, Ethos Appeals in Dweck, Colvin, Davis Discussion — Post Response & Reply to Two (2) Other Students

In order to increase our understanding of analytical concepts, it is often helpful to discuss our ideas and examples for what we are reading with others who are also studying the material. In discussing our ideas, we often notice things we had not seen before, can look at a text in a new light, and deepen our understanding of complex material. After watching the Logos, Pathos, Ethos video and reading the Rhetorical Appeals Logos Pathos, Ethos handout, answer the following questions for Dweck’s “The Secret to Raising Smart Kids,” Colvin’s “What It Takes to Be Great,” and/orDavis’ “Liz Murray Shares Her ‘Homeless to Harvard’ Story.” You can type your answers directly in Canvas by hitting “reply.” Then after submitting your response, reply to two (2) classmates with a comment, question, or connection to your own analysis.

1. Give a specific example from Dweck, Colvin, and/or Davis to show what an appeal to our sense of logic or logos looks like using data, facts, research, etc., and explain why they gave this specific example for their intended audience. In other words, why would this logos appeal be especially persuasive for their target audience?
2. Give a specific example from Dweck, Colvin, and/or Davis to show what an appeal to our sense of emotion or pathos looks like using stories of individuals’ suffering or triumph, etc., and explain why they gave this specific example for their intended audience. In other words, why would this be especially persuasive for their target audience?
3. Give a specific example from Dweck, Colvin, and/or Davis to show what an appeal to our sense of credibility or ethos looks like using valid source info., the writer’s credentials, discussion of oppositional points, and explain why they gave this specific example or detail for their intended audience. In other words, why would this be especially persuasive for their target audience?
4. Typically, a combination of all three rhetorical appeals makes our discussion particularly compelling for our readers. How can we use these examples of appeals to logic (logos), emotion (pathos), and credibility (ethos) to make our own writing well-supported and persuasive ?
