This exam consists of 2 short answer questions (3 responses). You are allowed to use resources, but you must submit your own original work. Make sure you are aware of what constitutes plagiarism.

The first two questions are content questions. The third question is a reflection. You should have 3 responses (at least 230 words each). Make sure all your responses are clear, grammatically correct, and professional.

Question 1 (at least 230 words)

Discuss the following terms: bottleneck, founder effect, gene flow, cladogenesis, homology. What do they mean, and how are they connected? You should be accurate, specific, and thorough in your response. All terms need to be explained, and this shouldn’t just be a list of definitions.

Question 2 (at least 230 words)

Refer to the following question:

Several statements related to evolutionary theory are listed below. Which ONE of the statements below is TRUE?

A) Temporary, seasonal changes in fur color in the African marten due to exposure to sunlight is an example of natural selection.

B) Evolution occurs when an individual adapts to the environment. For example, if an average man develops powerful arms from his job working in a factory, his children will be born with unusually high arm strength.

C) Eye color (which is controlled by multiple genes) is an example of a polygenic trait.

D) The theory of Uniformitarianism was formulated after scientists like Georges Cuvier made the observation that Earth’s landscape is shaped by violent, short-lived events that are still occurring today.

E) A plant species being preyed upon by cows possesses a protein which, through a single mutation, can change into a potent cow repellent. Natural selection will cause this gene to mutate more often.

F) Alleles are considered “dominant” if they are more common in the population.

G) Homoplasies demonstrate evolutionary relationships between closely related species.

Choose the correct answer, and briefly describe why you believe this answer is true while the other answers are false.
