ESL -1A /topic sentence

Help me study for my English class. I’m stuck and don’t understand.

t is time to begin your Formal Writing. We will start with ONE SENTENCE! It is a very important sentence–the Topic Sentence.

A Topic sentence is the first thing you read in a typical academic paragraph, and it lets you know what the whole paragraph will be about!

The purpose of this discussion is to compare and learn among your classmates how to write a topic sentence.

First post due by Wednesday, 11:59 p.m. Replies due by Sunday, 11:59 p.m.

What I want you to do:

First Entry–

1. Pick a character and decide on THREE personality descriptions for this character. Look at our Wiki Character chart for ideas.
2. Write a sentence giving the name of the book, naming the character, and three personality descriptions. This is a topic sentence.
   • example– “In Francisco Jimenez’s The Circuit, Francisco is a smart, brave, lonely boy.” Notice that the name of the book is italicized! This is the correct way to do it.
   • Warning! Notice also that I used three adjectives to describe Francisco. THAT IS MY SENTENCE! YOU MAY NOT COPY IT! You may use one of the adjectives, or two, but NOT those same three!
   • Try to write your sentences in different ways from the rest of the class. Example–“A boy named Francisco in The Circuit, by Francisco Jimenez, is a lonely, smart, and brave character.” (Same information as my sentence above, but put in a different order. You decide what order you want to give the information.)
3. Write your sentence as an “entry” for this Discussion.
4. After Wednesday, come back to this discussion and reply to at least TWO of your classmates, telling them why you think their sentences are good, or if they need improvement. You can suggest how to fix an incorrect Topic Sentence.

As always, if you score a .7 or more, your score will be changed to a 1.0 for credit. If you score less than .7, your score will be changed to 0 for no credit.
