Japan has a particularly high threat of natural disasters that range from hurricanes, tsunamis, and typhoons to high levels of snow fall, and earthquakes. Recently japan has suffered tsunamis, and earthquakes that have impacted the region. Japan has taken extensive steps to aid in implementing measures to safeguard its citizens against physical and institutional disasters. These counter measures can be broadly classified into five areas. First is scientific research into the technical aspects of disaster prevention. Second is the reinforcement of the countries disaster prevention system, its facilities and equipment, and other preventative measures. Third is construction projects designed to enhance the nations ability to defend against disasters. Fourth is emergency measures and recovery operations. Last is the improvement of information and communication systems. These efforts have been successful and have reduced casualties from natural disasters. Japan has taken these extensive measures for a few reasons which include the degraded ability of the country after World War Two and due to the frequency of disasters that impact the nation. On average the country of Japan lost 1,000 lives per year due to the natural disasters that annually occur that number has been reduced to between 100 to 200 per year currently. The Japaneses focus yearly on raising awareness and passing down knowledge on how to mitigate the after affects of natural disasters which aids in preparation, mitigation, response, and recovery operations across the country.
