Need help with my English question – I’m studying for my class.
I currently work as a registered nurse in a rural community in remote Alaska. Here in the outpatient clinic we act as a ‘one-stop-shop’ for the local community, providing OB/GYN, PCP, and everything in between.
In the medical field, the most recent e-mails that I have received are all regarding COVID-19 policy and procedure updates. These e-mails lack an emotional tone or motivation. In regards to cultural influence, there really isn’t any, as the e-mail simply acknowledges any changes, as well as gives updated supply counts. In terms of the audience of these e-mails, it is to all staff at the facility, both medical and non-medical alike, so they are written with clear and concise language that is not overly technical and is easy to understand.
As per our textbook, the main keys to writing are as follows: define/establish an audience, establish the purpose, create the message content, and ensure appropriate style and tone.
Defining an audience is an important key because it has a major influence on all of the other keys. The audience dictates the style and tone of the writing. The aspect of establishing purpose is crucial because it gives the writing it’s direction and main focus. The next major key is creating the actual content of the message; when this is successfully done, the content makes the writing applicable to the receiving body. Lastly, ensuring the appropriate tone and style aids in making sure there is very little external influence and/or personal influence to the writing.
Overall, it is of utmost importance to always keep these main keys in mind when writing in a professional setting. This is what allows clear and open communication between all parties.
