Autobiography ENGL 1301

I’m trying to study for my English course and I need some help to understand this question.

PART ONE INSTRUCTIONS: Answer each question as completely and honestly as possible. NOTE: You will NOT end up using all of the information below in your essay, and only you and your instructor will read it.

  1. What is something that life experiences have taught you? NOTE: This response may end up serving as the hook in your essay.
  2. What do you see in your future? More school? Job? Family?
  3. What are you most proud of?
  4. What are your regrets?
  5. What was the happiest moment of your life? The saddest? The most memorable?
  6. How would you like to be remembered? (NOTE: This response may serve as the final statement in your essay.)

PART TWO INSTRUCTIONS: Look through your responses to the questions, and answer the questions below.

  1. What is your dominant characteristic or the most important thing people should know about you? Answer this question in a complete sentence. Your response will end up being the THESIS for your autobiography (and the last sentence of your introduction paragraph).
  2. Now that you know the focus of your essay, read through your responses in part one again. Eliminate any information that does not support your focus. Then, narrow it down to THREE supporting points. Examples might be past, present, future OR family, friends, co-workers. You may choose to organize your essay by topic or by time (chronologically), but each of these supporting points must relate to that dominant characteristic (or the most important thing about you). The THREE SUPPORTING POINTS will be the topics for your THREE BODY PARAGRAPHS.
    1. Supporting Point 1
    2. Supporting Point 2
    3. Supporting Point 3

Assignment;

After reading through your questionnaire responses (Brainstorming Activity 1) carefully, compose a 1- to 2-page essay that focuses on what you consider to be your defining characteristic. The details you choose to include in your essay should be ones that support this focus only. (This means you will not end up using all of the information from your questionnaire.) Your essay should have an introduction (with a main point), multiple body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

Audience

Your audience is your instructor. This essay will serve as a formal introduction.

Constraints

Communication effectiveness is greatly dependent upon how well you analyze your audience and adapt your speech to them. Reflect on what you know about your instructor. The more personal and audience-centered the essay, the stronger your effects on your reader.

Begin your introduction with a “hook” or attention grabber. End your introduction with a thesis. In this case, your thesis should present what you consider to be your defining characteristic.

Begin each body paragraph with a topic sentence that presents the focus of that paragraph and connects to your thesis.

Do NOT include any information that does not support your thesis. This assignment should NOT be your life story. Use the outline provided to help you establish and maintain a clear focus.

Avoid second person; however, first person is fine, since you should be speaking about yourself.

Evaluation Criteria

The grading of this assignment will be based on assignment fulfillment, clear presentation of material, organization, effectiveness, and somewhat on grammar and mechanics.
