Selecting an Artwork

For your writing assignments, you will need to select an artwork to write about. The artwork

should have been made between 1945 and the present, the time period covered in this course.

before proceeding to write your first writing assignment.

First writing assignment

Your first writing assignment will be to write a one-page abstract of your paper. (In this context, an

“abstract” is a concise, written summary of the final paper that you will write.) The purpose of your

final paper will be to write an interpretative analysis of your chosen artwork, and to put it in

conversation with 1) one of the assigned readings on the course syllabus and 2) another artwork.

Your one-page abstract should provide a roadmap for what will become your final paper.

Your abstract should provide the following information to the reader: 1) what artwork you will be

analyzing in your paper, 2) a brief description of the artwork, 3) what assigned reading you will be

engaging, 4) what other work you will be comparing it to, and 5) what your working thesis about

the artwork is. The text for the abstract should be about 200–250 words in length.

You should also submit 1-3 images of your chosen artwork with your abstract.

So, to be clear, you should upload the following materials to “First Writing Assignment” under the

“Assignments” tab on Microsoft Teams:
