Hello Class,
I will compare the two bottom most layers of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Reference Model: the data link layer, and the physical layer. The data link layer’s primary function is framing, while the Physical layer is the actual topology (specifying voltage, wire speed, etc.). The physical layer is the nitty-gritty electronics. It is the actual sending and receiving of bits, as well as the mechanical requirements of maintaining a physical connection between systems. The data link layer on the other hand is one level “higher”. It formats messages into pieces called “data frames”. It also handles errors and message delivery to hardware MAC addresses.
IPv6 was introduced to increase the available number of addresses. As with any new technology it takes time and resources to attain complete adoption. However, eventually it will become a necessity due to limitations in the number of IPv4 addresses, and greater capability and flexibility of IPv6.
Sub netting allows us to break a larger network into smaller ones. Benefits of sub-netting include reduced network traffic on each individual network, greater organization (easier to manage a compartmentalized network), and ability to cover larger geographic areas. A sub-net mask is a 32 bit value that allows the recipient to distinguish between the network and host ID portions of the IP address.
