2. Leave in-text comments on the draft: 2 items per paragraph that deal with organization and content, 1 item per paragraph that deals with sentence structure and/or grammar

3. Answer all questions on the checklist provided below for your partner in complete sentences at the end of their draft or on the discussion board in a response to them along with adding their draft.

• Does the author present the issue in his or her introduction? Does he start from general information and move to specifics? Please provide specific feedback about the introductions format, information, and style.
• Does the writer introduce the speech, the author’s name, and the main point/argument of the speech?
• In the thesis, does the writer argue whether the argument is developed well/effective/convincing, rather than the argument itself? Does the writer argue about the how effective the argument is rather than agree or disagree with the point? Please provide specific feedback about the thesis.
• Does the writer support each of his or her claims with quotes from the speech itself? Please provide specific feedback about each body paragraph (quotes and analysis).

“What fear Can Teach Us” By Karen thompson Walker

A fear is merely a tactic of the imagination to keep one contained and weak, After listening to all the speeches, I chose the speech “What fear Can teach Us” By Karen Thompson Walker, who exemplifies how our biggest fears, the ones that control our mind might just be stories we make up in our mind, when in reality the smaller fears we push back can be the most realistic, but that’s something we never truly tell one’s minds, and not because it is impossible, but fear controls you if left unattained.

We stop ourselves from so much in life because our greatest fear overrides everything, and as Walker stated our greatest fears can make for the greatest of stories, but we cannot make those stories if we don’t choose to push past our fears slowly. She uses Pathos to get an emotional response out of the listeners and allows them to understand how letting your fear override your life will only get you stuck. And once you’re stuck, you won’t be able to move past your fear in life and you’ll be stuck in that same spot forever. We all tell ourselves to “live life to the fullest”, but that will never be possible if we choose to never let ourselves live our greatest stories that are yet to be written.

The greatest fears are usually the most unrealistic ones of all the fears we keep tucked away, and she proves this point by using evidence from the author of Moby Dick. He got the outline for his novel from a story he found about these men that were so afraid of cannibalism that they ventured out into the sea in order to avoid cannibalism, but their fears only drove them to perform it themselves instead of just facing their smallest fear which was starvation, but after all the stories they had heard, starvation was merely part of their imagination. The smallest fears tend to get pushed away the greatest because they seem so small and frail, as if they could never truly be real; while our biggest fears make way towards the front because they are like demons fighting for control over the mind of the person. And if they lose control they will no longer live in the human. As many times as humans are told to overcome their fears, the mindset is hard to change and will allow one to perform the most absurd of things if control of the mind is not made.

As humans we tend to push away our fears as we grow older and we overcome them, but they always remain there, but only in our imagination. Throughout the essay, Walker has an assumption that fear is ONLY in our imagination. It is something we make up in our mind that we allow to control us; fear is not a physical object of a person, it is something humans have made up as an excuse to stay where one is, instead of moving forward and writing one’s greatest novel. Going back to the story of the men on the ship that were afraid of cannibalism; they let their most vivid fear conquer their mind not realizing that it is merely a concept made up by the mind. Fears have their strength when one allows them to conquer the mind. But when one controls their mind to conquer anything, those fears will no longer control the mind and have a place to rest in one’s mind, and that is something that not everyone has mastered yet and it takes time, but the longer one takes the more those fears grow, and the actions that come along with them are unexplainable, like the men on the ship,. As the story of the men on the ship went; cannibalism conquered their mind, even though it was the one thing they wanted to avoid. They allowed their minds to play games on them, while not realizing if they feared the simplest fear, cannibalism was only a mere trick of the imagination.

Karen Thompson Walker’s speech “What fear Can Teach Us”, exemplifies the idea that fear is merely something that we make up, but as we grow older we conquer our fears the same way we allowed them to conquer our minds for so long. Through the use of Pathos, strong evidence and assumptions, the listener can conclude that it IS a portion of our imagination that we make vivid and true; but it is not with all fears, only the scariest of fears, those that seem too small and weak; we tend to forget. Because one’s mind plays games and tricks, if not controlled. How can an author write their best seller, if they allow writers to conquer their mind. It is not a physical object; merely a part of the mind that can be erased.
