1. What role did white supremacy, institutionalized slavery, and the development of a free labor economy in the Northern States play in the buildup to secession and Civil War?
2. What are some ways that the Lincoln administration reduced civil liberties during the war? Why did they do this?
3. After reading Douglass’s narrative, did it change the way that you understand the concept of slavery? If so, how?
