All semester, we’ve been going beneath the surface of events, actions, thoughts, speeches and ideas to discover meaning in the imaginative texts. We’ve made connections and comparisons. We’ve found allusions, metaphors, and symbols. We’ve looked at cultural myths about gender, money, class, race and beauty. We’ve delved into the feelings and secrets of characters. We’ve looked at their traumas. We’ve applauded their successes and empathized with their failures or shortcomings. We’ve felt bored and enthused. The list goes on. In past classes, students have found themselves with a lot of “What if” questions. For this week’s forum, let’s speculate on a couple of what ifs.

Let’s start by once again examining and charting the methods characters engage in problem-solving their obstacles and conflicts and their effects. Choose a character with a problem to solve. Examine and state all of methods and effects the character engages in. Put these into a narrative or a list. Either one is okay. Next, speculate on why the character chose those methods. Finally, examine yourself to find out what kind of advice you’d give the character based on which methods you think might work better and why. Speculate on the effects.

Discussion Topic

Review: Lenses can not only be fun to use, but they can also give us the chance to narrow and frame our ideas, so we’re not overwhelmed by all those scenes, dialogues, and exposition that make up a novel. For example, if we want to apply the Gender lens, we would then focus on how gender roles, conventions and belief systems (or myths) operate in the story. If we want to apply the Marxist lens, we would then focus on the role economics plays in the novel.

Explore the lenses. Apply the Moral/Ethical lens and one other lens to the novel Candide. Suggestions for second lens: 1. Gender, 2. Economic Determinist /Marxist, 3. Historical. 4 Structuralist for this forum. To apply the Ethical lens, you should approach your exploration through ethical reasoning, thus, use the ethical reasoning text. Be sure to refer to the terms presented in the ethical reasoning text, and quote from it.

Speculate on how you might use each lens differently in interpreting something the exact same scene(s), character motives or conflicts in the novel and why. It’s best to focus on the elements (character, setting, plot, theme, etc.).

Based on the definition and examples, you should have an idea on how you might use the lens. You might begin with something such as

If I were to apply the Deconstructionist lens, I would probably look at the ambiguity of the role Cunegonde plays in Candide’s life and attempt to prove that the pair’s circumstance and proximity prevent the reader from knowing whether they truly love each other. I would start by analyzing scenes in chapters in which they come together and and separate, and how that furthers the ambiguity and suggests the ambiguity and contradictions of their romantic bond. I’d look at four different scenes, in particular, to prove my assertion: 1. The scene in which… 2. The scene in chapter ? in which… and so on.

I’d summarize the scenes and in my argument that I plan to argue show the ambiguity and contradictions. You need not go beyond short summaries of the scenes.

How could the novel be used to enhance or add to the conversation during class discussion?
