1.) Free Basics, a philanthropic initiative formed by Facebook, was compared to “the promises that the British East India Company leaders deployed in the early days of the colonial project” (111). Does a social media company’s cultural position impact as a whole its missionary aims? Or, is it a Spivakian “white [company] saving brown [country]?” If the general welfare improves, does it matter the source? Why or why not?

2.) Please consider Vaidhyanathan’s statement about Facebook’s ‘Digital Imperialism,’ in the context of Marc Andreesen’s tweet (“anti-colonialism economically catastrophic”): “The ideology that too often guides decisions and campaigns dictated from Silicon Valley yet meant to benefit people far from its level of wealth and power” (112). The footnote, too, concerns solely Andreesen’s tweet. Do you think this is a fair or unfair generalization? Is Vaidhyanathan reaching for the lowest common denominator (to rhetorically judge on the negative), or is he, indeed, highlighting a company’s imperialistic tendencies? Do you think Andressen’s tweet is emblematic of the social media company? Why or why not?

3.) There’s a lot of exposition on markets, trade, company policy, Milton Freidman versus Edward Freeman, et cetera. Was this a distraction for you? It seemed to me like this chapter was almost erring on a concession toward Facebook being benevolent (“Freeman’s philosophy wins! It’s adopted by a lot of companies!”) What did you make of this? Was this a concession to Facebook’s actual benevolence?

4.) Please consider this statement and discuss: “But Facebook remains a force for good because its intentions are good” (124). Which has more value: the intention, or the consequent action? Where does the stress fall in these matters? Is this statement just tongue-in-cheek?
