Global Learning Activity and Report

Purpose:

This course encourages you to analyze events in United States history while also evaluating how such events have impacted the modern world. Moreover, it also challenges you to consider how developments outside the United States have influenced social, cultural and economic processes within the country. Acquiring this “global awareness”—or understanding of the interrelatedness of local, global, international, and intercultural issues—and gaining the ability to conduct multi-perspective analyses of such problems are central components to FIU’s Global Learning initiative.

Regardless of your major or discipline, these abilities place you in a better position to address challenging problems facing the United States and the world and provide you with tools for success in today’s complex and interconnected world. To enhance your global awareness and perspective, this course requires that you engage in a co-curricular activity to develop a short report with a multi-perspective analysis of a problem with local, global, international and intercultural implications.

Guidelines:

Step 1: Once over the course of the semester, you must attend a co-curricular activity (or watch a lecture/talk/or related event online) that addresses subject matter related to any of the themes discussed in your readings (land and labor, race relations, racism, gender, social inequality, laissez-faire capitalism, democracy, business and government, industrialization, social Darwinism, grass-roots movements, law, political activism, political parties, economic depression, constitutional amendments, foreign intervention, etc.). The co-curricular activity does not have to discuss explicitly an event in U.S. history. The purpose of this activity and report is that YOU make diachronic (across time), intercultural, international or transnational connections to the content in the course. Eligible activities include attendance to any of the following:

  • FIU talk or special seminar/lecture
  • Museum exhibit (in person or online)
  • Convention
  • Art exhibit (in person or online)
  • Festival
  • Theatre
  • Charitable event
  • Tuesday Times Roundtable (Links to an external site.) (watch online). For this option, make sure you select the second link “Click here to watch past TTR sessions on Youtube!” to view the different talks available.
  • Concert (needs pre-approval)
  • Movie (needs pre-approval)

Step 2: Take picture/video (if allowed) and notes that reflect on what you learned from this event. If picture or video is not allowed, take a picture of yourself outside the event. Alternatively, you may take a picture of the ticket or proof of attendance to the event.

Step 3: Write a brief 1-page report (double spaced in Times New Roman, size 12 font) that includes the following:

  1. A description of the event
  2. Who was in it? Who organized it?
  3. What was the purpose?

iii. What was discussed?

  1. Where did it take place?
  2. How was it financed?
  3. A reflection about how this event relates to the themes discussed in class.
  4. Consider how your own perspective as well as new perspectives introduced through course readings, lectures and/or class discussions help you understand the problem or issue discussed at the event. Explicitly, state which reading or assignment helped you gain this new perspective.
  5. Consider how the event itself gives you another perspective or understanding of the problem.
  6. Proof of attendance. Take the picture of you at the event or the photo of the ticket or proof of attendance and add it to the second page of the report. Pictures DO NOT count toward the required 1-page written portion of the assignment. If you have a short video, you only need to upload it to the Discussion linked to this assignment (read step 4), but make sure you note this on the second page of the report. If you choose the Tuesday Times Roundtable or film options, add appropriate links to the second page of the report.

Step 4: Upload the links to the Discussion “Global Learning Experiences.” (just make sure the link is added at the end of the page)
