Long Essay Topics

Write a critical essay of 8 to 10 pages (approx. 2400 to 3000 words) on one of the four topics given below.

Please note that issues, questions, and options listed under each topic are suggestions from which you may choose according to your own interests. In other words, you do not need to answer every question posed;rather, you should form an argument guided by the prompt.

You could also “customize” your topic by modifying one of the first four essay topics. If you would like to choose this option, please talk with your recitation leader as soon as possible and no later than April 16.

The “Life-as-a Journey” teaching team welcomes innovative ideas, engaged discussions, and well-wrought theses!

Topic #1: Original vs. Adaptation

Throughout the semester we have seen actors, interpreters, and poets bring our journeys to life, and often revive them for a contemporary popular audience. This paper prompt asks you to compare one of the original texts which we have read thus far on the syllabus with an adaptation of that text. The adaptation can be a film, drama, book, dance composition, work of visual art, etc. of your choosing. The following is not an exhaustive list of questions, but more so a line of questioning to facilitate an argument: How do the differences in medium, genre, intended audience, and the popular culture in which each was created produce different renditions of the journeys? What is lost in adaptation and what endures and why? Provide sufficient but not excessive detail for your reader to be able to note the similarities and differences between your chosen adaptation and your original text. Appendices with images/stills are also welcome.

Topic #2: Supernatural

The use of magic or the supernatural has been a recurrent theme in the journeys we have discussed this semester. Compare two texts that use supernatural elements to challenge the protagonist. Compare the use of magic for the protagonists’ character development and contrast magic‘s overall function in the grand scheme of the narrative. Remember to frame your assertions as arguments; it may be beneficial to consider the counterarguments. You may also consider the following questions: How does the supernatural directly affect the plot? When does the protagonist develop (if at all) and why? What is supernatural in the world of the narrative? Does the speaker or protagonist have any discernible judgements concerning the supernatural? Does the narrative condemn or endorse magic in any way?

Topic #3: When a Hero Goes Down

In our course, we have read a number of texts in which protagonists go down into a deep place and have an experience that is far removed from their everyday lives. Such journeys, whether literal or metaphorical, are unusual and challenging, and yet they can also be a life-changing experience for these characters. An epic hero typically undergoes a katabasis in the mid-point of the poem, descending to the underworld, encountering the dead, and returning to this life a changed person, stronger, wiser, and having a more profound understanding of this world. The theme of descent is not, however, limited to the genre of epic but can be found in other types of narrative. Choose, then, one or more texts that use this theme and consider why the characters (usually the protagonists) must undergo such an ordeal, what they gained, for whom they endured the hardships, and, lastly, how their descent influenced the outcome of the stories (that is,how the theme of descent functions in the narratives). Do you think only heroes are entitled to go down into the depth, or perhaps should it be the act of descent that give rise to heroes?

Topic #4:Open Topic

Design your own essay topic on one or possibly more texts covered through April 9 If you have chosen this option, please consultyour section leader as soon as you come up with ideas and ideally by April 9, and byApril 16 at the latest.
