Scenario #1

Mr. Rogers is the Senior Manager of Ladies’ Blouses, Inc. Recently, production has fallen by 27% and stake holders are getting nervous. Mr. Rogers believes that it is time to try an incentive plan to increase his workers’ motivation to produce the necessary number of blouses each week. He called a meeting of all employees and announced that he would be providing Friday afternoon off with pay for each employee who met the goal of producing 25 blouses a day, Monday through Thursday. Each employee will mark the blouses he/she produces with a number-coded sticker so managers can identify each employee’s production for each day of the week. A \$50.00 bonus will be added to the monthly paychecks of those employees who exceed daily production by five blouses for three out of four weeks in a month.

Teddy’s parents would like him to be able to sit quietly during weekly dinners with his grandparents. Typically, Teddy tells several stories of his day at school during these dinners. A few stories are nothing to complain about, but he goes into great detail and can talk about a subject for quite some time. As a result, there is rarely time for adult conversation.

Scenario #3

Marsha is in second grade. She loves school and being with her friends! She likes having her desk by the window so she can look out and watch the birds and butterflies in the courtyard. Recently, her teacher has noticed that she is not finishing her work. Mrs. Willis has noticed her looking out the window after she has given instructions for the class to begin working on the worksheets. While Marsha turns in all of her work, many of the worksheets are incomplete.

Duration is also used to measure difficult behaviors such as socializing. In the scenario Teddy is talking too much at dinner with his grandparents. Duration will be helpful to determine how long Teddy is talking.

The appropriate data collection device needed to record each target behavior: Duration per Occurrence Data Form, in order to record duration a device to measure time such as a watch, clock or stopwatch in order to observe and record behavior.

The measurable dimension of each target behavior: Latency

Discuss your reasoning for your selection. Latency was chosen because it is used when measuring how long it takes from when directions are given to the desire behavior occurs. In the scenario it would be when Mrs. Willis gives Marsha the worksheet, then Marsha looks outside, how long does it take before Marsha starts working on the worksheet.

The appropriate data collection device needed to record each target behavior: Latency Recording Data Form, in order to record latency a device will be needed such as computer systems, stopwatch or clock to observe and record behavior.

Discuss your reasoning for your selection. Latency recording can provide data if Marsh is getting better at starting the worksheets when prompted.

Scenario #1

In this scenario, the measurable dimension is the production of blouses. The problem behavior is that not enough blouses are being produced. Mr. Rogers introduced positive reinforcement in the form of a tangible (money, paid day off). “Latency recording procedures involve measuring the time that elapses between the presentation of an antecedent stimulus (e.g., an instruction) and the onset of a target behavior.” (Steege, 2019)

The best data collection device would be latency form. The number of blouses produced (x axis) weekly and then monthly (time, y axis) would be the subjects of the graph. This would not only measure if the number of blouses being produced increased, but also whether or not the intervention works over time, and the length of time between the presentation of the stimulus (monetary gain) and an increase of production.

Scenario #2

For this scenario, the measurable dimension is how long Teddy talks for. The measurement would begin when Teddy starts talking and end when Teddy stops talking for longer than a predetermined amount of time (5 minutes). “Duration recording procedures involve observing and recording the time that elapses between the start and end of a behavioral episode. Data are typically collected using a stopwatch and then expressed as a percentage of time or average duration. (Steege, 2019)

The best data collection device would be duration recording form. The length of time that Teddy talks during dinner would be the behavior and the behavior would only be measured during dinner with his grandparents.

Scenario #3

For the last scenario, the measurable dimension would be how many times Marsha looks out the window. The worksheets are to be completed within a specified time span; therefore, we can measure how often Marsh looks out of the window within the time. “Frequency recording involves observing and recording the number of times a behavior occurs within a specified period of time. The obtained data are expressed in terms of rate: number of occurrences/units of time (minutes, seconds, days) (Steege, 2019)

The best data collection device would be a frequency data sheet. Marsha fails to complete her work several times per day. She does some of the work but does not complete it which implies that her work is frequently interrupted by looking out the window.
