Social /Emotional Intelligence and Cultural Factors

Zastrow, Kirst-Ashman & Hessenauer (2019) define culture as aspects of an individual’s life that are shared collectively in a society. These aspects can range from goals to technology and art to behaviors and social expectations (Zastrow, Kirst-Ashman & Hessenauer, 2019). Social intelligence is defined as having the knowledge, skills and ability to manage social situations and emotional intelligence is having the knowledge, skills and ability to manage your own emotions as well as others emotions (Zastrow, Kirst-Ashman & Hessenauer, 2019). Gender roles are an example of a cultural aspect of life (Zastrow, Kirst-Ashman & Hessenauer, 2019). Gender roles are constructed by society and no matter what your gender roles are they fall into your culture (Zastrow, Kirst-Ashman & Hessenauer, 2019). One must have a form of social and emotional intelligence in order to manage gender roles in society. There were times when women were expected to complete certain tasks and men different ones, an individual would need to be able to control their emotions and manage the social aspects that come with socially constructed gender roles. Although society has broken through many unrealistic gender role expectations as a society there is still room to grow.

Applying the Concepts of Social/ Emotional Intelligence

In the case of Andres; due to his illness his roles changed dramatically within his family (Plumer, Makris & Brocksen, 2014). Although Andres stated he was okay, through his families social intelligence and being able to read Andres nonverbal cues such as facial expressions and body language they were able to gauge that he was not okay and needed help (Zastrow, Kirst-Ashman & Hessenauer, 2019). Andres was then able to work with a social worker through his emotions about his illness (Plumer, Makris & Brocksen, 2014). Working with this social worker allowed Andres to be able to communicate with his wife more which shows improvement in his relationship management (Plummer, Makris & Brocksen, 2014; Zastrow, Kirst-Ashman & Hessenauer, 2019). Andres was also able to be gain more emotional self-awareness by admitting that he needed help and that he was angry about his illness and role change (Plummer, Makris & Brocksen, 2014; Zastrow, Kirst-Ashman & Hessenauer, 2019).However he did not grow in his self-control as he continued to not ask for help which resulted in harmful falls, this shows a lack of growth in his self-management skills (Plummer, Makris & Brocksen, 2014; Zastrow, Kirst-Ashman & Hessenauer, 2019).

Social Workers and Social/Emotional Intelligence in Practice

In practice social workers can use social intelligence tests or emotional intelligence tests to gauge a clients ability to manage their emotions as well as social situations (Zastrow, Kirst-Ashman & Hessenauer, 2019). An example would include a client who showed signs of depression due to a lack of friends. A social worker could work with the client to ensure they had one emotional competencies in every category to give them a sense of emotional intelligence (Zastrow, Kirst-Ashman & Hessenauer, 2019). This would look like working on an individuals self-esteem, self-control, empathy, and communication skills (Zastrow, Kirst-Ashman & Hessenauer, 2019). Other areas the social worker and client could work on is recognizing what non-verbal cues are and what non-verbal cues the client is exhibiting in order to show the client how to manage their social situations (Zastrow, Kirst-Ashman & Hessenauer, 2019). Personal space, facial expressions, physical appearance, body communication and gestures are all examples of areas that can be learned how to read in order to obtain social intelligence (Zastrow, Kirst-Ashman & Hessenauer, 2019).

Emotional and social intelligence are closely related. Emotional intelligence refers to the ability to be aware of not just your feelings but the feelings of others (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2019). This includes qualities such as being empathetic, optimistic, and socially competent. Social intelligence is the ability to understand and act wisely when interacting with others. Culture can have a significant impact on social and emotional intelligence. Within the culture of Andres, he is taught that the men are the head of the household, strong, and meant to care for everyone else. Since Andres’ illness, the roles have changed, and he now needs to rely on his family for assistance. Culture can affect how people interact socially and can navigate their emotions. In the cultural arena, emotional intelligence is essential for one to understand where others are coming from.

In the case study, Andres is described as an older male from Honduras, a well-educated retired child psychologist who was physically fit until his recent illness (Plummer, 2014). His livelihood became disabled after being diagnosed with a brain tumor and Parkinson’s Disease (Plummer, 2014). In Andres Case, the therapist was familiar with the Latino culture and describes that she had a significant amount of experience working with Latino patients (Plummer, 2014). As a social worker in Andres’s case, I would educate myself on the history of men and women in Honduras. Educating myself on my client’s culture would help me not only to have positive emotional responses when working with clients but also to understand why an individual within a given culture responds a certain way. Using emotional intelligence, a social worker can provide support, empathy, and compassion towards our clients.

It is beneficial for social workers to understand social and emotional intelligence and how these two areas can influence individuals that they work with. Maintaining awareness of our emotions and our clients can help a social worker demonstrate interpersonal skills more effectively. In Andres’ case study, the social worker was able to empathize with him in understanding his challenges and experiences, such as the loss of his independence and role changes. Despite Andres’ diagnosis, he still has the hope for a “miracle cure” (Plummer, 2014). Andres’ hopeful disposition, along with a strength-based approach, should be utilized. I would help Andre focus on the strengths and tasks that he can complete independently or with little assistance from his family. Also, I would discuss with Andres and his family about linking them to additional resources such as support groups. Andres’ wife is already struggling and is overwhelmed. She may benefit from attending a support group so the family can share personal experiences, coping strategies, or obtain first-hand information about treatment.
