Textbook: Exploring American Histories: Volume 2, 3rd Edition

You don’t need to use the textbook. This is very short notice I understand.

Professor does check for plagiarism.

SECTION III: Pick ONE of the short essay questions to write about. Your response must be 2 full pages long (typed, Times New Roman, 12-point font, 1-inch margins, double-spaced) and must follow the prompt instructions completely. You must also answer all the prompt questions directly, accurately, and in detail. You may only consult the textbook and assigned videos for your essay responses. Please organize your response into paragraphs. You may organize each 1-2 paragraphs around Part A, B, and C of the essay prompt. (For instance, your first 1-2 paragraphs will address Part A, second or third paragraph will address Part B, etc.) You don’t need to write an introduction or conclusion paragraph for your short essay, just launch directly into answering the prompt questions.

UPLOAD INSTRUCTIONS: Please type your response on a Word document and upload it onto the turnitin.com submission link listed in the Exam One Module. As usual, your essay should have no more than 25% duplication score in your turnitin.com report.

Pick ONE question to write about:

  1. The Gilded Age. A) Write a ½ page introducing and summarizing what the Gilded Age was. (timeframe, main developments, major characteristics) B) Describe in detail 1 or 2 exciting change or technological advancement that impacted people’s lives during the Gilded Age. Be sure to explain how this change or advancement changed people’s lives. C) Describe in detail 1 or 2 ways that people’s sufferings increased during the Gilded Age. Between B and C, you must discuss a total of at least THREE examples in detail.
  1. The Progressive Era. A) Who were Progressives and what were their typical characteristics? Describe 3-4 of their key characteristics in detail. B) What were some important reforms implemented during the Progressive Era that improved people’s lives and/or working conditions? Discuss 1-2 in detail. C) At the same time, what were some of the more questionable/racist/controversial activities undertaken by Progressives? Describe 1-2 in detail. Between B and C, you must discuss a total of at least THREEexamples in detail.
  1. U.S. Imperialism. A) Define imperialism and explain why the U.S. “waited” until 1890 to begin embarking on overseas imperialism. B) Why did the U.S. get involved in the Spanish-American War? Discuss 2 reasons in detail. What happened to the war once the United States got involved, and what was the outcome of the war? C) How is the Spanish American War an example of U.S. imperialism?
  1. The Great War/World War I. The U.S. involvement in World War I is a prime example of a large-scale war led by Progressives. For Part A) Describe President Woodrow Wilson’s attitude towards U.S. involvement in World War I. What were his desires and actions during the beginning timeframe when the U.S. was getting involved in the war? And how would you describe his key beliefs and philosophy regarding the end and resolution of the war? You’ll want to consult Chapter 20’s discussion of World War I for your answer to Part A. For Part B) Describe 2 examples in detail of how America’s Progressive leaders expanded the size of the federal government during the war. And for Part C) Describe 1-2 examples in detail of how World War I proved to be a very stressful experience for Americans.
  1. The Great War/World War I. Explain the progression of World War I. A) Explain why and how World War I broke out in Europe. (Do not merely list 5 reasons and events. Pick 3-4 and discuss each in detail.) B) Explain in detail how the U.S. got involved in World War I. C)Explain what happened at the end of World War I with a focus on the United States. What happened to Wilson’s desires for his Fourteen Points at the Treaty of Versailles? What happened to the League of Nations, and why did key U.S. Senators refuse to allow the U.S. to join the League of Nations?

(Sorry for the funny formatting in Question 6. Canvas was a bit tricky and wouldn’t allow me to format #6 in the same way as the previous questions.)

6. The Great War/ World War I. World War I is an example of a total war in U.S. history. In the context of U.S. history, total was can be defined as “an all-encompassing war that requires a massive joint military and civilian effort. In total warfare, civilians are all expected to make sacrifices and changes to their lives to support the war.” Total wars tend to profoundly affect the lives of civilians during times of war. Based on readings and videos from the course, discuss in detail 3-4 examples of how World War I was a total war for American civilians from 1917-1918. Please make sure to discuss each example in detail.
