Juvenile sexual offenders are a very diverse population. Some are at risk for recidivism, while others may have committed status offenses and will not pose potential future risk. Some may have complex treatment needs, and others may have intellectual disabilities that make treatment more complex. Amenability to treatment can vary, and parent involvement or acceptance can mean a lot for the treatment of juvenile sexual offenders. Risk assessments for juvenile sex offenders can help determine many of these risks and potential areas that should be focused on during treatment. Assessment should be the first phase of treatment for any offender. There are several different settings where juvenile sex offender treatment can take place. They include the following:
Community-Based Treatment: This is the lowest level of care for treatment. A community-based treatment program allows the juvenile to live at home and obtain treatment in a community setting. This allows the juvenile to maintain normalcy and a connection to the community. Community-based treatment tends to be less intensive treatment-wise and does not allow for the juvenile to get daily treatment. It is generally one or two times a week in an outpatient setting and is typically used for low-risk offenders. This form of treatment requires accountability on the offender’s end from day one.
Residential Treatment: Youth offenders can be placed in a residential treatment setting. This allows for more intensive and more frequent treatments for sex offenders. Residential treatment programs are very structured and allow for different levels within the same program. This may mean different dorms or different levels within a treatment model. Youth may be sent to residential treatment if they have been unsuccessful in community treatment or if their risk assessment was too high to allow them to live in the community. Residential treatment may separate a youth from his or her family and support system. It should be noted that residential treatment may include treatment for sexual offending behaviors while incarcerated in a juvenile facility, and not always in a residential setting.
If the victim of the offender is within the family, victim-specific treatment is very important if the youth is to ever return home. Treatment for parents is also important, as well as for the family system as a whole. Treatment models often include cognitive behavioral therapy and reframing thoughts. Group therapy can also be used to help keep juveniles accountable.
Treatment goals that are often used with offenders include:
Relapse Prevention and Aftercare Planning: This is a vital part of the treatment for all sexual offenders. During this process, they develop an aftercare plan, which involves a safety plan for when they may be triggered. They look at their risk areas and develop skills around handling them.
