Parents do not have the right to demand that schools censor their children’s reading materials, but they have the right to tell their kids what to read and what not to read. It would be wrong to say to another parent how they should raise their children and what they should and should not allow their kids to do. So, it would be wrong to demand a school to read over materials before the children can learn them. Yes, kids do tend to read books and think that since it is in the book, it may be ok or fun to do. This is where we step up as parents and tell our children that they should not read individual books.
If we tell our children no, some are going to find still a way to do something anyway. Even if they do not have the books at school, the children still can have access to bad reading material. I agree that parents have the right to voice their opinions, but we can’t speak for every parent. What one parent may consider being inappropriate for their child may not be inappropriate to another parent. I also believe that some parents do not want their children to be exposed to the world, but instead teach them how they think the world should be. Every parent has the right to freedom of speech, but they cannot believe that everyone feels the same way.

At some point during children’s uprising, the majority of parents become concerned with one or more reading materials that are provided by schools. Parents have the right to be concerned and voice their opinion, but not the right to demand that schools censor reading materials.

Schools teach a variety of topics that require the use of other reading materials. Parents have different opinions on what should be censored compared to other parents. If schools were to take every reading material off the shelf that parents demanded to be, teachers would be limited on what they could teach. The opinion of one parent would affect the children of every other parent in the same school district.

Children should have the opportunity to broaden their knowledge and imagination. Books give children the chance to have fantasies and escape the day to day troubles they may have at school or even at home. Some children even find that they love to read which becomes a hobby long term. This gives them the opportunity to shape themselves, decide on what they really believe in, and experience different perspectives.

Parents have the power to censor what their children read out of school hours. This lets the parents raise their kids how they may decide. Every parent has a different way of doing things. There is a specific curriculum allowing teachers to teach topics based on what the children are aloud to read. The more reading materials that can be taught, the more the children will learn.

I do not believe parents have the right to demand that schools censor their children’s reading materials, but parents do have the right to voice their opinions and concerns about the material being presented. I think it is a difficult situation to decide whether parents should have this right or not simply because of the fact every parent is not the same. Some parents’ opinions and concerns about the reading material can differ from the other parents. Something one parent may have an issue with, another parent may not. If parents had this right, the opinion of one parent would affect all the children of the other parents. Schools would find it difficult to teach considering they would only have limited things as to what they are allowed to teach.

If all parents as a majority vote wanted something to not be taught to their children, I believe the schools could take that into consideration and stop teaching that one thing because voting is a fair way to make decisions. With making it a right it would not be fair to everyone since everyone may not agree. School is meant to educate children and broaden their knowledge, using different types of reading materials will allow that. As children become more mature, the readings they will learn from will also become mature, but children will grow up to choose what they want to believe in and a parent’s opinion will not always be the right thing for the child.
