Need to write Discussion about Persepolis and Maalouf

One original post of 300 to 500 words must be completed by. Two additional replies to peers’ posts of 200 to 300 words must be completed.

For this discussion post, I’d like you to think specifically about identity in Persepolis. What issues of identity are explored in Persepolis, through the character Marji or others? What features of Marji’s identity does Satrapi seem to present as the most important? How specifically is that importance emphasized (through images, language, scenarios– what details within them all?)? What other themes or concepts begin to appear alongside the development of Marji’s identity, and how do they relate to/directly impact/complicate the basic issues of adolescence being discussed? What seems to be Satrapi’s overall goal with her story? Who is her audience? How do we know? What new aspects does the form of the graphic novel bring to the conversation? What is she trying to convey in telling this story, about identity or otherwise, and how is that made clear to the reader?

Besides reflecting on identity, try to bring in the ideas from our Maalouf readings this week as well. Maalouf is writing about some broader theories of identity, but focuses in specifically on identity in situations of conflict, prejudice, hate and violence. For Maalouf, identity is almost defined by conflict and resistance. How can Maalouf’s concepts be applied to Persepolis, a novel centered on the development of a young girl in an environment of extreme change and violence? How does Satrapi’s argument in her novel relate to Maalouf’s observations regarding larger political and ideological influences on identity? How might Satrapi’s story support Maalouf’s theories? Are there ways in which the two differ? How can Maalouf’s text help us better understand the character of Marji and the argument that Satrapi is making through her?

As with all of these posts, you may also pull in additional discussion regarding the text overall: it may be an aspect of the reading that you found most interesting, an aspect of the reading you don’t understand, a close reading of a specific section, a connection to other readings or things outside of the class that you feel relate, a questions that the text left unanswered, a disagreement with the text, etc. You should be writing to the directions above, but you may add on as you please, my main goal being that you are thinking critically about what you read.

For all discussion posts, I do ask that you cite directly (and properly, in MLA) from the text to support your claims.

It will also be helpful for you to consider Essay One when writing your response. The writing of that essay is often easier if you can pull already established ideas from the discussion posts you create.
