Essay 400-700

I don’t know how to handle this English question and need guidance.

I will be taking the whole course with you.

Purpose:

The goal of this assignment is to introduce you to analytical writing: specifically writing about literature. Also, this assignment should improve your ability to read and think critically.

Task:

Compose a short, analytical essay using John Updike’s “A&P”. Focus on the central character in the story (Sammy) and develop a thesis relating some aspect about the character to the overall theme of the story. In other words, how does Updike use this aspect of Sammy’s character to help him develop/reveal the theme of the story? Remember, do not simply summarize the story. Also, do not use any secondary sources for this paper (the story will be your only source); I want only your ideas about the story. I don’t care what the internet says about this story or Sammy. I already know this.

Evaluation:

Paper will be assessed on a number of criteria including– organization, development/support, clarity of ideas, and grammar. Simply summarizing the story will lead to a failing grade. You must critically analyze the story.

Format:

The final copy should be between 400-700 words. Paper should be in standard MLA format. The paper will be submitted via Canvas.
