Mediated Communication SelfAssessment

1. Observe your communication over the course of an entire day. What percentage of your time do you communicate through mediated channels? What percentage is facetoface?

Throughout my entire day, I’ve noticed that my attention seems to be focused on my phone. During this trying time, I have been active on social media such as SnapChat and Instagram to communicate and keep up with my acquaintances. About 75% percent of my day consists of checking my phone for emails and messages sent through social applications, whereas the other 25% is interacting with the people in my house.

2. In general, do you prefer email, phone, textmessaging, or other mediated communication or facetoface communication? Why or why not?

After using various forms of communications throughout the years, I continue to prefer contacting my friends and families through nonmediated channels of communications. I find facetoface communication to be more convenient as I can understand and see their reactions as they speak. This makes it easier for me to have a comfortable conversation rather than seeing toneless texts on SnapChat.

3.Specifically, when and why do you choose email, phone, textmessaging, or other mediated communication or facetoface communication with instructors, family, friends, coworkers, supervisors. How have those choices affected those relationships?

When speaking to someone in a professional setting or someone with high respect such as family members, I prefer to use phone calls as my mediated channel of communication or facetoface communication if possible. These choices affect my relationships with my coworkers/boss and family because I think hearing one’s tone of voice and body language is very respectful and wellmannered. Whereas using text messages to communicate with my friends is a more informal and playful way of communication. I think my choices reflect greatly on the idea of there’s a time and place for everything, in this case, it is a difference between manners and friendly jokes.

4.Is your use of mediated communication specific to particular situations, such as quick conversations, sharing pictures, or avoiding uncomfortable conversations? What has been the impact of your choices in those types of situations?

Majority of the time, my use of medicated communications is related to specific situations such as sending a quick joke or pictures through social media or text messages. In these situations, it impacts my decision to use mediated sources of communication because it is more convenient than going to the store to develop a picture and physically hand the image to another person. Convenience is usually the main reason as to why I use mediated communications, especially when sometimes the other person cannot be reached.

5. Does your choice of mediated communication or facetoface communication vary with the person’s age, gender, relational dynamic? How have those choices affected those relationships?

Growing up in a traditional Asian household, I was always taught honorifics. This influences my decision to use phone calls or facetoface communications with people who are older than me. This decision strengthens the relationship because most of my elders will not know how to send a ‘tweet’ back to me. People who are my age or younger, I use social applications, texts, and facetoface communications. This makes my relationship with them more accessible as we can communicate through various platforms when there’s no time to physically meet.

6. In general, how do you think your relationships are affected when you use mediated communication rather than facetoface communication?

I think my relationships that were built based on mediated sources of communication are weak. The reason for this is because it takes time for one to see the notifications and to find time and reach back out. Personally, I tend to procrastinate a lot,so I usually do not respond until a few hours later. If I was facetoface with the other person, we would be having a good conversation without any delays whether it’d be showering or working, etc.
