Read the primary documents on p. 332-333, in the textbook, Give Me Liberty! – From Letter by Joseph Taper to Joseph Long (1840) and From “Slavery and the Bible” (1850)

Answer the following questions:

1. How does Taper’s letter reverse the rhetoric, common among white Americans, which viewed the United States as a land of freedom and the British empire as lacking in liberty?
2. Why does De Bow believe that it is important to show that the bible sanctions slavery?
