Writing to Communicate 2: from paragraph to essay

This assignment has two parts as follow:

Part 1 Process Essay (25 marks)

Format and Word Count:

The students should:

• outline a process essay on a topic of their choice. (5 marks)
• write a four-paragraphs essay 350 words. (20 marks)

Introductory Paragraph:

• An opening sentence / hook
• Background information that can give a quote, an anecdote, a surprising piece of information/statistics or a historical hint
• A thesis statement that presents the topic under discussion, the controlling idea and the predictors.

Two-body Paragraphs

• Start each body paragraph with a topic sentence related to the thesis statement.
• Write major and minor supporting sentences by giving facts/statistics/percentages, examples and/or personal experience/anecdote.
• End each body paragraph with a concluding sentence.

Concluding paragraph:

• A restatement of your thesis statement.
• A brief summary of the steps you have followed to start your campaign.
• A final comment that provides a comment, a tip, a piece of advice and/or a recommendation.

Part 2 Argumentative/ Persuasive Essay (25 marks)

Format and Word Count:

The students should:

• outline an argumentative/persuasive essay on a topic of their choice. (5 marks)
• Write a five-paragraphs essay 450 words. (20 marks)

Introductory Paragraph:

• An opening sentence / hook
• Background information that can give a quote, an anecdote, a surprising piece of information/statistics or a historical hint
• A thesis statement that presents the topic under discussion, the controlling idea and the predictors.

Three-body Paragraphs

• Start each body paragraph with a topic sentence related to the thesis statement.
• Write major and minor supporting sentences by giving facts/statistics/percentages, examples and/or personal experience/anecdote.
• End each body paragraph with a concluding sentence.

Concluding paragraph:

• A restatement of your thesis statement.
• A brief summary of the steps you have followed to start your campaign.
• A final comment that provides a comment, a tip, a piece of advice and/or a recommendation.

Referencing:

The essay should include in-text referencing and a list of references (external resources) at the end as per the requirements of Harvard Referencing System.

Guidance on Addressing the Topic:

Before you embark on writing the two essay, you need to read all the mechanics of writing discussed in your textbook in order to familiarize yourself with how to apply them on your two essays.

You are strongly advised to consult different sources on the chosen theme/topic and widen your knowledge of the theme/topic under consideration, but it is of the utmost importance to document any words or ideas that are not your own.
