Early conceptualization of nursing theory

Early conceptualization of nursing theory entailed aspects influencing and determining to nurse. These four concepts include person, environment, nursing, and health (Schim et al., 2007). The person concept is also known as the patient concept, and it states that the recipient of nursing care is the patient. Nursing care improves the satisfaction and overall results of the patient. The environment concept states that both the external and internal surroundings affect the patient (Thorne et al., 1998). These effects of the environment can either have a negative or positive impact on the patient’s health. The nursing concept focuses on the care provided by nurses. According to Watson theory, nursing is a profession that focuses mainly on providing care to patients. To achieve this goal effectively, they have to take care of themselves first (Kitson, 2018). On the other hand, the health concept focuses on the degree of wellness that the patient experiences. The concept views illness and health among patients as two different things.

Nurse-patient theories

The theory was developed by Hildegard Peplau, which emphasizes a nurse-patient relationship. This theory paints nursing as a field where nurses engage with patients who need their help and services. Therefore, the theory insists that nurses get to know their patients at a personal level and create a bond with them. According to this theory, the nurse-patient relationship passes through various stages: the orientation stage, identification, exploitation, and finally, the termination stages.
Under the orientation stage, the nurses are supposed to establish a therapeutic environment with their patients. They are also meant to build a strong rapport with their patients by showing acceptance and a non-judgmental approach. In the identification stage, the nurse is supposed to identify the problems that their patient has. At the exploitation stage, the nurse should evaluate and explore various solutions meant to help the patient. In the termination stage, the nurse ends their relationship with the patient after meeting the predetermined mutual goals (Hagerty et al., 2017). The success of these stages depends on how effectively the patient self-manages all their initial challenges or issues (Chinn et al., 2017).

Nursing Theories

Introduction

Nursing theories aim to define what nursing is and why nurses act the way they do. These theories play a role in giving guidance to various nursing practices incorporated in the health care sector (Karp, 2019). For one to understand nursing theories, it is advisable to come to terms with the attributes involved. This paper will discuss the early conceptualization of nursing and its building blocks. In addition to that, I will further outline what nurse-patient theories entail.

Early Conceptualization of Nursing Theories

In nursing, knowledge is required to build a better foundation based on theories resulting from systematic research activities. According to Stolley et al., (2019), the first nursing theorist was Florence Nightingale. They further outline that she created both medical and nursing reports. Florence pointed out people as spiritual and physical beings who strived to emphasize the importance of environment and why people should care for patients. The nursing theory has played a major role in guiding one rather than researching a natural outgrowth in education and the nursing identity as a profession in the 1960s. In the early evolution of nursing, people viewed nursing as an apprenticeship that enabled professionals to offer health care services. As the years rolled by, the advancement of academic preparation led to an increase in the number of nurses.
When nurses offered health care services, they dwelt on researching causative agents before deciding on the treatment plan. The nursing concepts were logical hence relied on culture development when seeking validation before offering health care services. Qualitative and qualitative research methods came into existence during the 1980s and 1990s to help in explaining complex ideas in clinical operations. On the other hand, the increasing number of educated nurses has led to better health care experiences in line with the patient’s behavior and how they respond to health services (Stolley et al., 2019).

What nurse-patient theories entail

Theories are beliefs or outcomes of a particular action. To understand what nursing theories are, we must acknowledge how nurses attain their foundation in nursing practices. Nursing theories help in evidence-based research practices. These theories influence the wellbeing of patients by ensuring one provides the best health care services to patients. They allow nurses to offer the best health care services to patients through identifying a particular concept and implementing it to ensure one is healthy (Younas & Quennell, 2019).
In conclusion, the arising nation challenges health care due to the visible changes impacted by new technologies and advanced education that has helped innovate health care systems. Most people involve themselves in managing their health and focusing on their personal growth.
