Crosswords Play Review
As I entered the Barnelle Theatre, I did not expect to laugh as much as I did. I expected a
long, boring, non-exciting play, one I would not appreciate at all. I am very happy to say that I
was indeed wrong, because Crosswords was one of the most enjoyable plays I’ve ever been too.
Crosswords is a comedic one acts play with a series of different scenes written/directed by LMU
alumni and current students. The play shows LMU’s exceptional theatrical arts program where
us the viewers encounter and explore the human experience through their performances. In the
following paragraphs, I will go into detail of each act with my opinion of the scenes.
The first scene was called ‘Hometown Champs’. I enjoyed that fact that the scene
portrays real life situations that are happening in the world right now, such as being accepted as
who you are. Even so, the scene was comedic. What I loved most of the scene was the bickering
at the end as the lights were going off. For a split second, I felt that it was actually real, and no
one was acting which was very impressive. Although, a minor flaw within the scene was that the
table was too low, which made it uncomfortable for the actresses and it showed. However overall
the set design elements of the act were excellent. The second scene “You, Me, and Jeffrey,” was
an extremely comedic scene. The actors expressed their emotions very well, for example, the
brother’s fear of heights. The character, Jeffrey, was my favorite within the scene. I believe that
he was the one that held the script together (unlike the air balloon). The story was about two
siblings having a conversation. The brother was going to propose to his sister’s roommate and
best friend which leaves the sister stressed and not supporting her brother. Therefore, she took
him on a hot air balloon ride despite her financial problems. Now, Jeffrey was just the man in
charge of the balloon, but he sure does know how to be included in a conversation, which made
us, the viewers, laugh a lot.
The third scene was my favorite out of all the eight acts. It was called “Beyon-slay,”
which was about a semi-insecure drag queen that had second thoughts on her performance. The
scene focused on how important friendship is, because in the end friends should always bring
each other up not matter what. What was great about the scene was the drag. What I saw as in
fact a show in which I absolutely loved and enjoyed very much. The costumes and makeup were
exceptional as well as the directing of the act. The dance was in sync which means more than
enough of effort was put into this act. The fourth scene called “Rest Stop Rumble” was average
in my opinion comparing to the first three acts. The scene was about a couple at a rest stop in
which crazy workers oversaw the store. It wasn’t one of my favorite but was comedic,
nonetheless. The fifth scene, “bAAAe” had a rom-com feel to the act. The staging was
exceptional as well as the acting. I enjoyed the lightning when the AAA guy called his lady
friend and how it focused on the other end of call. The actor’s frustration was portrayed very
nicely as well as the whole script of that particular scene.
After the intermission, there were three scenes left, which did not in fact exceed my
expectations especially since I overly enjoyed the first part of the show. The next scene was
called “Da Great Train Robbin” which was my least favorite act. I felt that the scene was too
long, and I didn’t feel like it was real. I wasn’t on the edge of my seat per usual. The costumes
were semi-okay, but again overall not enjoyable. The actors kept slamming the table while
talking more than regularly which seemed too forced and unpleasant especially since it was very
quiet in the theatre. Only one costume out of everyone in the act was nice. The next act was
called “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.” It was extremely funny and the actor’s expression of the dangers
they were facing seemed genuine, which I appreciated a lot. Although, I did feel the stage
elements were somewhat limited. As the directing goes, there was a lot of back and force, which
might be to shield the fact that there were limited props, or it might not be the case. However,
that was what I thought of it. Finally came the last scene, “Gost Townie”. The set was beautifully
constructed as well as the directing. The costumes and makeup were lovely as well as the
lighting. The main actress’ voice in that act was so beautiful that it compelled me into
sympathizing with the sorrow by her singing voice. Although I was hoping the show would end
on a happy and comedic note, the entire play was quite enjoyable no matter what.
The change of acts was incredibly professional and exceedingly quick which was
impressive. Overall, the writing, directing, and the acting of the play was phenomenal. What I
believed would be amazing was if each scene somehow connected with the other, as in if each
act crossed world with the other. This is indeed a very hard task to do, however it would be plain
genius and insanely wonderful if it was possible and constructed in an organized manner. This is
what I believed was going to happen between the first couple of scenes, obviously that was not
the case. But, the rest of the play did not disappoint. My overall rating of the play would be
8.5/10 which is great comparing to the ratings I’d give for the “A Doll’s House” play that I did
not enjoy one bit. Maybe it was the fact that it was too long and not interesting because I could
not relate to the characters whatsoever unlike “Crosswords”. I believe “Crosswords” was
beautifully constructed with true comedy and I’d say considerably full of soul. So many different
characters, personas, and situations that kept the whole play interesting. Kudos to those who put
all the hard work, sweat and tears within the plays, because such effort is very much visible and
appreciated by everyone.
