STAT 200 Penn State Lesson 12 Correlation and Simple Linear Regression Lab Answer the questions in this document in a different color and not bolded.
Always show your work; full credit will not be given to answers without work shown. If you do hand calculations, show your work using the Word Equation editor. If you use Minitab Express or StatKey include the appropriate output (copy + paste).
Always clearly identify your final answers and round all answers to 3 decimal places.Must have Minitab to complete this assignment (data attached below) STAT 200 LAB -Lesson 12: Correlation and Simple Linear Regression

Answer the questions in this document in a different color and not bolded.
Always show your work; full credit will not be given to answers without work shown. If you do
hand calculations, show your work using the Word Equation editor. If you use Minitab Express
or StatKey include the appropriate output (copy + paste).
Always clearly identify your final answers and round all answers to 3 decimal places.
For an example of formatting, see the sample lab in the Lesson 1 Module in Canvas.
If you have any questions, post them to the course discussion board.
Use complete sentences and always provide explanations along with any screenshots or
software outputs.
Use the file FacebookFriends.MTW to answer the following questions. These data were collected by
Kanai, et al. (2012). These researchers were studying the relation between the number of Facebook
friends that an individual has and grey matter density in the areas of their brains that are associated
with social perception and associative memory. The dataset contains two variables: (1) GMdensity is a
measure of grey matter density in the brain and (2) FBfriends is a count of the number of Facebook
friends.
A. Create a scatterplot with FBfriends on the X-axis and GMdensity on the Y-axis. [10 points]
B. Describe the relationship between FBfriends and GMdensity as shown in your scatterplot in
part A in terms of shape, direction, strength, and outliers. [5 points]
Shape:
Direction:
Strength:
Outliers:
C. Use the five-step hypothesis testing procedure to determine if there is a statistically
significant relationship between FBfriends and GMdensity. Use Pearson’s r and Minitab
Express. [25 points]
Step 1: Check assumptions & write hypotheses
Step 2: Compute the test statistic
Step 3: Determine the p-value
Step 4: Decide to reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis
Step 5: State a “real world” conclusion
D. Use the five-step hypothesis testing procedure to determine if FBfriends is a statistically
significant predictor of GMdensity. In other words, test for the significance of the slope in the

simple linear regression model. Use Minitab Express. Don’t forget to check all of the
assumptions! [25 points]
Step 1: Check assumptions & write hypotheses
Step 2: Compute the test statistic
Step 3: Determine the p-value
Step 4: Decide to reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis
Step 5: State a “real world” conclusion
E. Use the five-step hypothesis testing procedure to determine if GMdensity is a statistically
significant predictor of FBfriends. You may assume that all assumptions have been met. [25
points]
Step 1: Check assumptions & write hypotheses
In this question we were told that all assumptions have been met.
Step 2: Compute the test statistic
Step 3: Determine the p-value
Step 4: Make a decision
Step 5: State a “real world” conclusion
F. Compare the slope, y-intercept, p-values, and r-squared values for the models you tested in
parts D and E. Which values are the same and which changed when the variables were
flipped? [5 points]
Slope:
Y-intercept:
P Values:
R-Squared Values:
G. Identify and interpret the coefficient of determination for the relationship between
GMdensity and FBfriends. [5 points]
