INSTRUCTION
You are to write a medium-length (approximately seven to ten (7 – 10) pages, typed, double
spaced) essay on atopic of your choice which is relevant to the subject-matter of this course.
Your paper should deal with at least one (but oftentimes more) of the required course
texts, and use both the required text (or texts) and secondary materials (in, for example,
philosophy and political theory, or peace studies, or political science, international relations and
other social sciences. such as economics or history) to explain and evaluate an issue or
controversy in this subject.’
Most importantly, your essay Should include some sort of argument’, that is, a thesis, plus
your reasons for thinking that your thesis is reasonable, plausible, worth further consideration,
or (even) true. These reasons, both positive and negative, will include, for example, some or all
of the following: logical considerations, moral and philosophical considerations, contemporary
empirical data, historical evidence, or theoretical considerations arising from the social sciences,
all assembled in a coherent manner. Your personal opinions, or your personal ‘feelings.” by
themselves and unsupported, are irrelevant in writing this paper, though they may provide a
starting-point for your writing or a helpful check on the course of your reasoning. As should be
clear. there are many possible ways to successfully complete this assignment, not a single “right”
one.
Having said that, many students find a writing assignment in a philosophy class a difficult
one. One common temptation is to try to do too much, and the result is an unfocussed and
superficial paper in which (say) all aspects of peace have been mentioned but nothing much has
been shown to be more plausible than anything else. The writer has, perhaps, said a lot, but
neglected to make an argument supporting a specific thesis.
Another common temptation is to tell a story but without using the story to do anything
besides entertain or titillate. Stories are fine, but you are telling that story to make some
specific point, so make it clear ultimately to the instructor, but first of all to yourself– what
the point of your story is.
Your goal in this paper, rather than bare surveying or bare storytelling, is (as I said above)
to make an argument.
One more-or-less straightforward way of doing this is to use the theoretical apparatus of
the course text (or texts) to analyze a situation which the textbook does not analyze. Looking
ahead in the semester a bit, for example, in Just and Unjust Wars Michael Walzer sets out a
moral framework for evaluating the justice or injustice of using force in war (the theory of the
just war, or just ad bello). Except for the Prefaces, however, this book was written in the 1970s,
before the U.S. went to war with Iraq in 1991 and 2003; you could write a paper in which you
apply the theory of jus ad bello as explained by Walzer to a later war and evaluate its (in)justice.
Or, alternatively, you might make your paper a critique of one of the course texts. using
the secondary literature on that text and on that subject-matter to provide support for your critique.
“Critique” may be positive or negative; that is, you may argue that some claim or set of claims
in the course text (or texts) is plausible (positive), or argue that some claim or set of claims in
the course
text or texts is not plausible (negative), but either way you are attempting to assess the strength of
the arguments which Could be or have been made relative to some specific claim about peace, the
absence of peace, peace movements, etc. For example, Walter’s analysis is sometimes criticized as
being too nation-state-centric, applicable more to state-to-state conflicts such as the Second World
War but less applicable to the sorts of “‘asymmetric” conflicts involving groups like al Qaeda or the
Islamic State. Is that criticism a fair one? If so, could Waller’s framework be modified to account
tar and explain the moral dimensions of such conflicts, or not?
Be sure to attribute ideas, and the expressions of those ideas, to their original authors,
properly cited. Use one of the standard citation and formatting styles (APA, Chicago!Turabian, or
MLA): if you don’t have a preference among these three, use Chicago,Turabian as a default. The
Online Writing Lab at Purdue University has a useful set of materials on all three of these styles;
you can access these materials via the Internet at https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/section/2/.

this assignment is. in part. a test of your ability to distinguish reliable sources from
everything else that’s on the Internet.
Ill. And third. state at least one book, book chapter, Or article from the required course
reading which connects to your paper topic.

page numbers. plus a URL where appropriate. All citations should be done in one of the
