You are required to select and watch a film that we have not (will provide list of movies watched) watched in our class. These are five components to the paper. Research Paper Assignment
The paper must be 10 to 12 pages in length and is worth 30% of your overall grade. It is
due at the beginning of class on December 5. This assignment will require you conduct
research on scholarly (peer-reviewed) material and failure to do so will negatively impact
your grade. It is also permissible to include non-scholarly sources within the paper. You
may not cite any scholarship that has been assigned in this class. You must bring a hard-
copy to class as well as upload your paper on the Turnitin link that can be found on
Blackboard.
The purpose of this assignment is analyze an aspect of a film that deals with some
element of the American judicial system. You are required to select and watch a film that
we have not watched in our class. There are five components to the paper: (1)
introduction with a thesis statement that sets forth a roadmap for where the paper is
going; (2) a factual overview of the film that you have selected; (3) discuss one specific
law-related theme, e.g., prosecutorial misconduct, attorney client privilege, jury
misconduct, etc, that is being portrayed in the film; (4) analyze/evaluate whether the film
is an accurate portrayal of the law-related theme you selected in the real world, based on
research you have conducted; and (5) to the extent that the film offers an accurate
portrayal or an inaccurate portrayal, discuss the filmmakers’ ultimate purpose in offering
this perspective. Please note that the overview of the film should be rather brief with the
bulk of the paper focusing on the analytical portions of the paper.
Your paper must be word-processed, double-spaced, with 12-point font and 1-inch
margins. It must be stapled in the top left-hand corner and have a coversheet (no report
folders, please). The coversheet does not count toward your page total. You must
provide a citation within the body of the paper whenever you refer to, or rely on, any
source other than your own thoughts. This includes arguments, examples, facts,
quotations, paraphrases, or any thoughts and ideas inspired by something that you read.
Please use parenthetical citations in the body of the text and set out the full citations in
your work cited page. No endnotes, please. My preference is MLA format for purposes
of citation. Only include sources in your work cited page that you cite in your paper.
Please note my late policy (see syllabus). It is never worth turning in a paper late.
