Please visit the Modern collection of paintings and other art works at the Metropolitan
Museum of Art. For purposes of this paper, “modern” is defined as the 20th-21st
centuries. However, you may also include work from all areas of the museum that fall
within this period. Don’t be intimidated by either the size of the Met or the number of
works on exhibit. Take your time. Move slowly and look attentively. Discover your own
particular way of looking at art, especially the pieces that attract and hold your attention.
For your benefit, a floor plan of the museum is available at the information desk in the
main lobby.
Select four works that capture your interest and in which you can see connections
between the paintings and what we have been learning about in the course. For each
work, identify it by title and artist and take a photo so that I can see what you are
writing about. (All photos should be placed on a separate page at the end of your paper).
Then discuss the ways you see the works you have selected illustrating aspects of
modern life we have been talking about in class. I am more interested in what you see and
think than in what the wall cards say. They can help you, but they should not speak for
you. A cautionary note: No more than two of your paintings may be by the same artist
and your selections must reflect works produced in at least three centuries.
Some questions you might want to consider as you think about the paintings you choose
are: Why am I choosing this painting? What about it do I like or dislike? How do I see it
relating to ideas or events or people that we have talked about in class? Are the artists I
have chosen all of the same nationality or are they from different countries? Were they
using their work to speak about certain political, social, or other issues in their day? What
do you think the artist wanted the viewer to see or feel when looking at the painting? If
you had to explain this work to the class, what would you say?
Broadly speaking, the subject you are writing about is how art (painting, sculpture,
photography, fashion, design) can be used to help us understand modern history.
The length of your paper should be between 750-1000 words (or 3-4 pages). For the most
part, there are neither right nor wrong answers or positions. But there are well developed
papers and ones not so well or thoughtfully developed. As I read and comment on your
papers, I will read for clarity, organization, a distinct pint of view, development, and
standard grammar and usage. There should also be an introduction and conclusion. I will
also read for how you are linking the works you have chosen to the subject matter of our
course. This is neither a research paper nor a biography of the artist. What I am
interested in is seeing the connections that you make between paintings that you have
selected and the course.
If you wish, you may organize your selection of paintings around a theme. Some of the
themes you can choose from are: Power, Faith, War, Social Conflict, Rural Life, Urban
Life, High Society, Family Life, Recreation, Tradition and Change, Technology,
Women’s Lives, the World of Children, Poverty and Wealth, Passion, Sports… Or you
can present four very different works that you discuss individually. There are many ways
of looking at art, and I want you to have the opportunity to develop your own thinking.
However, please do not write me a paper for art history that how the painter applied
brushstrokes in imitation of x to achieve dazzling effects not equaled since.
Please proofread your paper before submitting it. Also please avoid lengthy introductory
paragraphs that describe the weather on the day you went to the museum, the means of
transit you used to get there, the number of people you encountered at the museum—all
things that can be very interesting, though not relevant to the subject of the essay you are
writing.
Located at Fifth Ave and 82nd St, the Metropolitan Museum is open until 9:00 PM on
Friday and Saturday evenings. On all other days the museum is open from 9:30 – 5:00.
Note that admission to the museum requires a donation. HOWEVER, you do not need to
pay the suggested donation. You may give what you want. A dollar or a dime would
suffice.
Due Date: Papers are due in class on Monday, December 9th. Pages must be bound
together—I cannot take loose sheets of paper. Late papers must be delivered to me in my
office (room 1713 in 163 William St.). I cannot accept emailed papers.
A note about plagiarism: I do not expect to encounter plagiarism but if I do it will result
in an F for this assignment. That also includes using the internet to try to do the
assignment along with producing online images rather than photos taken by you at the
museum. Please include yourself in one of the photos you take.
A Note About Photos: Please do not forget to take these. If you forget, I will feel
sorry for you but also insist that you return to the museum to take the photos. In
this situation, I will not accept internet images. No exceptions.
