Concert Review Guidelines
Assignment: Go to a “live” music performance and write a review on your
experience. Inform the reader about what you heard and provide some
background information on the music style, ensemble, musician(s),
instruments played, venue (where the performance took place), etc ..
**Event/Concert must be during the current session of this course!
Format: 2 pages typed; paragraph format; double-spaced; standard margins.
Please provide a ticket
, program, flyer, hand’stamp, or picture of the event you
attended
What did you see? … describe the venue, the audience, the area where the
venue was located, dress and demeanor of the musicians and the audience,
number of musicians and audience members, lighting, mood, etc.
What did you hear?. this is the most important part of this assignment.
I want to read about what you actually heard … in your own words OR using
the vocabulary learned in class. Describe to the best of your knowledge,
what are the musicians doing? Were there singers? How many? Men,
women or both? How did they sound individually or as an ensemble (group)?
Were there instruments being played? What kind? Was it all
“instrumental”? Were there “sections” of instruments? (such as “strings” or
“horns” or “brass” or “percussion”) How did these instruments work
together? (ex: the rhythm” section) or how did they compliment one another?
(ex: how did the horn section accentuate what the singer was doing). Were
there any techniques being used by a musician or vocalist that stood out to you?
Or seemed unusual? Summarize your review at the end and communicate
to the reader the quality of your concert experience.
Other suggestions: Plan ahead! Call to confirm show times, ask about
tickets or cover charges, age restrictions, dress codes, directions, parking, etc.
Be prepared with a small note pad to take a few notes. Also, if the situation
or venue allows, talk to the musicians themselves. All of the musicians I
know love to share their knowledge with anyone in the audience who is
curious enough to ask! So, don’t be shy and HAVE A GOOD TIME!!
