English 20
Dear Professor Overby,
Having taken your English 20 Section 11 class this semester, I have significantly grown as a
writer, learner, and critical thinker. Through insightful discussions in the collaborative learning
environment of our classroom, I was able to better self-regulate my learning, think more
critically, and overall learn much more about other discourse communities especially of those
within my group.
In the beginning of the semester, the class focused on learning about self-regulated learning,
understanding how each individual learns differently from others, and most importantly
discovering how one can improve one’s self-regulated learning abilities. I found that teaching
this concept in the beginning of the semester was immensely beneficial and crucial to developing
our skills as writers, readers, and learners. Discussed in the first highlighted portion of my
revised Self-Regulated Learning essay in Section 3, I clarified to the reader how I was a natural
at Mathematics and Physics. By reminiscing about my childhood education and interests, I was
able to pinpoint important turning points of my life that assisted me in overcoming the many
hardships I had at the time. For instance, thinking critically about how I faced problems as a
child and relating them to how I face my issues now, I found that I have always thought through
each situation in sequential order. I would first begin by identifying the issue at hand, the
possible factors that resulted in the conflict, then brainstorm about how the problem effects both
me and the people around me. After having decided on a strand of ideas, I would conjure
solutions for the one scenario. Afterwards, I would do the same for every possible combination
of resulting factors, issues, and effects on people in hope of concluding with the best possible
outcome for resolution. After quickly realizing this, I was able to identify this type of critical
thinking as a structured and logical way to approach issues. From then on, I was able to selfregulate my learning by utilizing structured and formulaic methods to critically think through
each situation in sequential steps.
Having realized and practiced enhancing these self-regulated learning skills have proved to be
extremely beneficial to me, for I have developed new skills and character traits throughout my
self-regulated learning journey. Although self-regulated learning was initially more of a hassle
than it was beneficial, it allowed me to find my interest in computer science and artificial
intelligence in senior year of high school. Fortunately, this new-found love for computer science
and artificial intelligence had positively affected my experience with self-regulated learning in
that it became entertaining, much more efficient, enlightening, and routine. Although school
assignments initially appear to be an annoyance, the essays in your English 20 class have become
more enjoyable due to their relevance to my personal interests. With joy came more extensive
and in-depth research which ultimately helped me to develop a stronger work ethic, a routine and
personal interest to conduct research on my own, and motivation to seek higher education.
As the semester progressed, I had found myself improving in my critical thinking skills. Prior to
this class, my critical thinking skills were not as keen as they are now. Through constant
engaging intellectual discussions with the class and those around me such as my group members,
I was able to enhance my critical thinking skills in numerous ways. For instance, by being an
active listener and communicator, I was able to point out and focus on the differing perspectives
of every individual both in and out of conversation. This is portrayed through the first
highlighted portion in my revised Editorial paper in Section 2. Not only was I able to provide
more depth in the paper regarding marijuana and its effects on people, but I was also able to
provide more breadth through critically thinking about other perspectives that people may have
on this highly controversial issue. Actively listening and communicating with others on a regular
basis has truly helped me to be less bias both in formal assignments and as a person in general. In
this editorial, I noted possible reasons for the conclusion that marijuana is not as harmful as
cigarettes. In fact, I stated that the prohibition of marijuana had limited cases to study on and, of
course, made it illegal to conduct such studies. With little information to base scientific research
on, we lack accurate knowledge regarding marijuana and its effects on people.
Lastly, conducting research on the Computer Science discourse community helped me better
understand not only my discourse community, but others as well which overall further developed
my self-regulated learning and critical thinking skills. In order to compile my research essay in
Section 1, I conducted research and collaborated closely with my group members. Engaging in
thoughtful conversations with my group members and exchanging information and feedback
allowed me to understand how members of other discourse communities perceive my discourse
community and its vast complexity of topics and specializations. My critical thinking skills
allowed me to understand their thoughts and perceptions of the computer science discourse
community while also helping me understand theirs through our collaboration on a group project
in which we had to understand how our discourse communities collaborate with one another. For
instance, the Government International Relations discourse community focused on the United
States’ relationship with foreign countries while the Nursing discourse community focused on
the well-being of people. With my Computer Science discourse community being focused on the
development of technology and how it advances society, we were all able to decide on the idea
that we can all provide a public service to people such as Obamacare. The government would
ensure that every person has access to health care and medical insurance with the help of
programs developed by computer scientists. Nurses would utilize this program and send
information to the government for evaluation. With all health care and medical insurance
requirements met, the patient would be approved for health care and medical insurance.
After having completed this group assignment, I was able to better grasp the values, motives,
concerns, and goals of other discourse communities. This greatly helped me to develop and
strengthen my research paper in Section 1. By incorporating more clarity into the paper, I was
able to help those who are members of other discourse communities and those who are
unfamiliar with the computer science discourse community better understand the ideologies and
complications of our discourse community. For instance, in the first highlighted portion of my
revised research paper in Section 1, I explained in detail how artificial intelligence is formed and
how it works internally. By breaking the process down into more simple mathematical terms
with extensive explanations, I was able to simplify the process and ideas in such a way that those
unfamiliar with computer science would be able to understand them.
Through the various insightful assignments and essays that we were tasked with, I was able to
develop crucial life skills that will help me in every situation throughout my life in the future.
The Self-Reflective Narrative on Personal Learning Style essay has enabled me to realize my
learning strategies, utilize them more effectively to maximize my learning potential, and allowed
me to develop a strong work ethic, perform extensive research on my own will, and provided me
with motivation to seek higher education. Writing the Editorial paper enhanced my critical
thinking skills through the acknowledgement of other perspectives on an issue which helped me
to be less bias in my research, assignments, thinking, and as a person in general. The Discourse
Communities Group Project revealed to me other differing perspectives on topics in relation to
personal discourse communities and their ideals. By understanding that there are various
opinions regarding each topic and their roots from their respective discourse communities, I
became much more open-minded which is reflected in my Discourse Community Research
Paper. The addition of clarity exemplifies my understanding and acknowledgement of other
discourse communities and their unfamiliarity with mine. Understanding this, I ensured that I
made clarifications to sections of my research paper that may be confusing especially to those
outside of the computer science discourse community. Overall, taking your English 20 course
has helped me greatly improve as a learner and critical thinker more than any other class that I
have taken.
Sincerely,
xxxxxx xxx
Dear Professor Overby,
During my time in English 20 I learned a lot of information. I feel like I excelled so much
in my writing skills and believe I became a better writer during this course. You taught me a lot
about many topics in the English aspect of things. I learned a lot more about Self-Regulated
Learning, Critical Thinking/Universal Intellectual stands and Discourse communities. During my
time taking this course I found out what Self Regulated Learning is.
Being an SRL student I focused my attention to goals where I gathered information. I
improved self knowledge this way and I also stretched out my knowledge of the expertise I was
looking into. As an SRL student you know your strengths and weaknesses. I sure did know mine.
You made us write weekly agendas about our goals and what we want to achieve that week. For
instance, in my SRL journal entry number 8 I wrote, “I also have a group presentation on
Monday to present to the class so we will see how that goes. I try to set goals this week to study
every day of the week for my three exams. I need to do well on all those exams.” I set goals for
myself during that SRL journal and that’s to test my own expertise on the subject of all my
exams. Students like I who are self-regulated learners think that opportunities like taking on
tasks that are hard will help us develop a better knowledge to the topic. I love to tackle the day
head on with a positive mindset. When I do that, it helps me accomplish a lot more in the day
rather than waking up with a negative mindset. Not only did I learn more about self regulated
learning, I strengthened my critical thinking.
While I was taking your course you instructed us to do a research essay about a question
that we are intrigued by or extremely curious about. You wanted us to dig into the topic and try
to find out more and more about it. I was successful doing this. I chose the topic of limits on free
speech. This led to my questioning of the topic. I questioned, “However, what if allowing
someone free speech puts others in danger? What if someone just saying a few words could cost
others their lives? Should the fundamental value of free speech be limited if this is the case? ”
my research paper revolved around these questions and proved a great statement that limits on
free speech should be limited when it can be in harm’s way. Now when you look at the topic of
limits on free speech there is so much that goes with it. So now it’s which side you’re taking on
the statement and how will you go about your path. My quality reasoning behind this statement
is that limits on free speech should occur when it causes harm. That way people will have rights
to free speech and it won’t cause chaos in this world. In my research essay I backed up my
information with respected sources, “The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said,
that “when some people use this freedom of expression to provoke or humiliate some others’
values and beliefs, then this [free speech] cannot be protected”. As I finished my paper I realized
how much I was exposed to the critical thinking aspect of my writing skills. However, I still
didn’t know much about discourse communities.
Last but not least is the subject of discourse communities. A discourse community is a
group of individuals who have a set of values, assumptions, and discourses and share it between
themselves. Some people define it as a group of people who have goals and use communication
to accomplish it. You had us present a presentation about any topic we can find interesting facts
about and we chose how social media affects our studying habits. We chose two discourse
communities. We chose the field of Education and Psychology. We interviewed a professor and
a graduate student. They had two takes on this matter and it was nice to see how two different
communities have the same answer for one topic. I interviewed the graduate student Hemza
Salem and he said, “I believe it’s a huge distraction. It can affect you in a way to not give you
time to study; however, it can also be a way to help you study by looking at different sources of
information. “While the educations professor said, “I tend to look at social media and education
as separate in terms of using it as an educational tool; however I am looking at the effect of it.”
Two different communities shared their thoughts on it and both had their views on it. Both were
similar in their respected communities.
After learning about these three topics this semester I felt like I became a strong writer. I
understood the fundamentals of these topics and each of these topics can play huge parts in your
writing style. It broadened my writing views as a writer and expanded my knowledge on so
many styles. I’m glad you showed and introduced me to these topics and will look forward in
using these fundamentals in my future. Thank you.
Sincerely,

Portfolio Letter Instructions
ENGL 20/20M
Your portfolio will be a compilation of multiple drafts of three formal writing assignments that you have
completed throughout the semester (Essays 1, 2, and the Research Paper). You will begin your portfolio
with a persuasive letter addressed to me, your instructor, in which you will formally state your case for
having learned and progressed during the semester, particularly as it relates to 3 key concepts that we’ve
studied and discussed this semester: Self-Regulated Learning, Critical Thinking/Universal Intellectual
Standards and Discourse Communities.
Your Portfolio Letter should make claims about what you have learned in relation to each of the 3 key
concepts above and what your current understanding of them is. The claims you make should be
supported with examples from your reading and writing assignments. All assignments you’ve completed
are eligible to be used as supporting examples, but you should make a particular effort to refer to the 3
major portfolio essays.
The Portfolio Letter should be written in formal academic language as much as possible. You will need to
refer to yourself and your writing in the first person, and you may address me in the second person if you
wish. Avoid informal language such as slang that you would use in a letter to a friend.
Your letter does not have to follow standard essay organization, i.e. introduction, body, conclusion, but
paragraphs should make claims, support those claims with evidence from your assignments and explain
why the evidence is persuasive.
Requirements
1) Your portfolio letter does not need a heading as it will immediately follow your portfolio’s cover page.
Begin the letter only with Dear Professor Overby. Sign the letter at the end with “Sincerely,” or “Regards,”
etc. and your name.
2) Your portfolio letter must address all three key concepts (Self-Regulated Learning, Critical
Thinking/Universal Intellectual Standards and Discourse Communities).
3) Supporting evidence for your claims should come as much as possible from revised writing that you are
including in the portfolio. You may either quote directly if you are referring to a sentence or short passage
in your writing, or you may direct me to the location of the text to which you are referring, i.e. “in the second
paragraph on page three of my research paper . . . .” Other assignments may also be mentioned as you
see fit ( articles and handouts read, journal entries, peer reviews, 5 point worksheets, Presentation etc.)
You may refer by description to your participation in your group research paper.
4) For each supporting example you use from your writing, you must explain why it persuasively supports
the claim for which you are using it.
5) You may organize your letter as you wish, i.e. chronologically, by concepts 1, 2, 3, by essay drafts etc.
as long as it has some logical organization.
6) One of the purposes for your portfolio letter is to demonstrate your formal writing skill at the end of the
semester. Therefore, it is a one draft writing assignment. Be sure to carefully proofread your Portfolio Letter
for any needed grammar, wording or spelling corrections.
7) Please single space your portfolio letter (see the sample portfolio letter).
8) There is a minimum requirement of 700 words for your portfolio letter. However, students often
write much more than that to clearly and persuasively make their case.
RESEARCH PAPER
Introduction
Information Technology (IT) has, over the years, transformed from a relatively recognized cost- cutting
tool to a critical strategic initiative for organizations that cut across industries and companies. To have a
clear comprehension of IT, one is required to get a closer look at how IT has grown over time and the
impact that it has on business environments in general. With the current evolution of organizations
evolves, managers and shareholders are continually looking for avenues to improve on their
organization’s profitability, efficiency, and quality in the services they provide (Lacity & Mary, 1993). In
the absence of IT Outsourcing, institutions would have to bare exorbitant installation costs on complex IT
systems. Additionally, they would have to employ the skills of highly professional services that would
hurt the companies’ profits.
Even though IT Outsourcing is closely associated with numerous merits, it has also been credited with
numerous limitations that have reduced its efficiency in flexibility and quality and slowed its adoption in
equal measures (Lee & Jae-Nam, 2013). A mix of factors exists that may vary from one institution to the
other and are directly either directly or indirectly associated with limitations of IT Outsourcing. First,
High costs that are closely associated with employee transition that are involved with manual monitoring,
personnel development, and training processes in the initial stages of IT Outsourcing. Secondly, system
acquisitions may prove costly as it will involve system acquisition cost and networking.
Problem Statement
Dibbern and Jens (2004), allude to the fact that close to half of deals associated with IT outsourcing may
be unsuccessful since the parties involved may or may not live up to their desired expectations. Critically
analyzing the cases of failures reveals that the results emanate from expectations misalignment, in which
the vendor, sets an unrealistic expectation to get a contract and is unable to deliver. Moreover,
studies have established a swift solution should be put into play for standardized benchmarks for the
industry IT outsourcing. Fong (2004) reiterated that institutions should initially approach tactically
outsourcing, then with precise care, defining the scope of work, and later have tools for monitoring for the
functions outsourced.
